THE BUZZ
Bruton rallied from 13 points down at halftime to upset James Monroe 57-50 on Thursday to earn its spot in the final (and Group AA state tournament). Bay Rivers District Player of the Year Jen Falin led the Panthers with 20 points, which is about what she averages per game. Greensville got 19 points and 14 rebounds from 6-foot-2 Gabriel Tyler to defeat Poquoson 65-50 and earn its place in the final. Tyler teams with 6-3 Kelly Flythe on a frontline that dwarfs a Bruton team with no player taller than 5-11. Their height allowed the Eagles to throw the ball over the Poquoson press, rather than dribble through it. Bruton relies heavily on its presses and traps, so it will have to do a better job than Poquoson did at forcing turnovers to beat the Eagles. The Panthers also must neutralize the inside-outside game of Quaneva Avent, who averaged 17 points in earning Southside District Player of the Year honors.
