Four BRD wrestlers reach state finals
SALEM -- Tabb High 130-pounder Andrew Williams led four Bay Rivers District wrestlers into Saturday's finals of the Group AA state wrestling tournament.
Williams, a junior in quest of his third individual state crown, beat Abingdon's Aaron Wilson 8-6 with a takedown seven seconds into sudden-victory overtime to win his semifinal.
Two Poquoson wrestlers won their semis to advance to Saturday's 6 p.m. finals. Kayton Marshall pinned Scott Crane of Brentsville District in the first period to win a 145-pound semi, while Del Bryce edged Martinsville's Antwon Hairton 4-2 to advance to the final at 160.
The Bay Rivers' other finalist is Grafton 189-pounder Chad Ennis, who edged Blacksburg's Joey Phillips 5-4 in the semifinals.
Six Bay Rivers wrestlers lost their semifinals and dropped into the consolation round: Poquoson's Steffan Baker (112 pounds), New Kent's Luke Todd (135), Poquoson's Cody Silva (140), Smithfield's Chris Collins (171), Tabb's Paul Bresnan (189) and Grafton's Keith Person (285).
Christiansburg leads the AA standings going into the finals, with Poquoson fourth and Tabb 10th.
