RICHMOND — Franklin’s bid for its first state girls basketball championship in 23 years fell short Saturday when the Broncos couldn’t keep up with a Buffalo Gap team that left its coach easily pulling out the superlatives.

“This was not our best day. We’re disappointed. We’re absolutely disappointed,” Franklin coach Mona Sumblin said after the Broncos lost the Group A Division 1 championship game to the Bison 83-66.

The victory left Buffalo Gap’s first-year coach, Chad Coffey, pulling out the superlatives. Of the team’s 30 games, “this was by far the best game the girls have played. They played a tremendous game.

“And it looked like every time they started getting a run, we would knock down a 3.”

Four Bison scored in double figures, the team shot 54 percent, and Renee Buford or Samatha Long supplied five second-half 3-point baskets.

“Buffalo Gap was definitely on point today,” Sumblin said.

Franklin’s Timia Hobbs, the Region A player of the year, scored 22 points, while four-year force in the middle Janice Holeman closed out her career with 19 points and 14 rebounds for the Broncos.

Franklin made seven trips to the state semifinals as a Group AA school in the first 11 years of the tournament, but until this year, hadn’t gotten that far since winning it all in 1985.

Buford’s 21 points led Buffalo Gap.

Brittney Roberts, the Bison’s only senior starter, added 18, and Holly Morgan and Sara Lammeck scored 15 each.
