HEHS is better than the score indicates. Like I said before they are vastly improved. They got 14 hits vs. MHS granted 6 were from 2 girls but when the rest of them start hitting some PD teams need to watch out.

^ Agreed, Overall the Canes have stepped up tremendously from last year's season. Their bats have gotten a lot better and they play more like a team they keep this up they may shock some teams.

I want to respond to the Menchville vs. Heritage softball game.

I first want to say that it was a good game by both teams, good sportsmanship, and all around well played. Heritage has improved, and I only feel that this is good for the district so that competition increases and makes the games stronger and the wins sweeter.

However, I have one personal issue that has bothered me for years in this district. Stats.

The stats called in were way off. My pitchers only gave up 5 hits, 4 walks, and one hit by pitch. Alyson Laughrun pitched 3 complete innings and to 2 batters in the 4th. Melissa Holt finished the game and recorded the save. There were not 14 hits, and Laughrun did not struggle. She gave up 2 runs and 4 hits with 6 strike outs and 1 walk. Holt gave up 2 unearned runs, one hit, had 2 strikeouts, 3 walks, and one hit by the pitch.
We also had two errors which allowed batter's to reach base.

I also wanted to let people know that Amanda Lane went 3 for 4 with 2 triples, 2 RBIs and 2 Runs. Also Melissa Holt hit her first varsity HR. Heather Miller was also 2 for 4 with 1 double and 2 RBIs. I feel that stats are very important to get right. There is no reason for stats to be inflated, it only hurts the players in the long run. As coachs we need to be fair to our athletes and report true stats. It makes better athletes and keeps the dignity in the game.

What I have seen with questionable scorekeeping in both PD and BRD is that they fall into 2 buckets:

1. A parent scoring a Hit or Error to rise a player's BA/RBIs or to lower an ERA.
2. A student keeping score who is unfamiliar with all the rules of proper scorekeeping, such as errors, Pass Balls, Wild Pitchs or a Fielder's Choices.

Sounds to me like the Heritage Scorekeeper might have been counting Fielder's Choices were a runner on base gets thrown out at 2nd or 3rd as a hit for the Batter by mistake.

What I don't understand is why the Daliy Press would try to publish this Forum a story about a game based on a called in score that they obviously did not personally attent. Did they use to work at the NY Times?

Because we have to depend on schools to report results to us. And, whether anyone likes it or not, the home scorebook is the official book.

It happened at the HRA-Hampton Christian game as well. There were at least 5 errors made by HRA, but the paper said one. If two outfielders drop a ball at separate times, how is that not an error??? HC should have had 2 hits, instead of the 9 that was sent in to the paper.

Lets not forget that these aren't professional stat keepers that are on the books at most of these schools. They are doing the best they can. While its not unreasonable to expect relatively accurate statistics, there are going to be mistakes and errors in the stat book. Thats why both teams keep a book and not just the home team. Everybody does deserve their due recognition in the paper, but the DP can only report what is called in and the coach is reporting what is recorded in his or her book. Ultimately when it comes to the district balloting at the end of the year, each coach will bring his or her own statistics and the girls will get their proper recognition.
