Among the fans at the Lafayette-Jamestown match were two members of the Eagles' Class of 2006: Lauren Howell and Mary Kate James. They were two of the big reasons that Jamestown's Bay Rivers District winning streak went from six years to nine.

Never have I been so happy to hear Mary Kate's voice as I was via cellphone on Monday, a little after the bloody Cho saga had ended. She was remarkably calm, I thought. (She lived in the other Ambler Johnston dorm, Anyone who knows anybody at Tech -- and be honest, that means ALL of us -- were worried sick.

Mary Kate is on the Tech tennis team but wasn't high enough in the lineup to go on the travel squad to the ACC tournament. Since Tech is closed for the week and her Hokie teammates are gone to Raleigh for the conference tournament, she took the time to watch her former Jamestown teammates, as did Lauren.

Kudos to anybody from Lafayette and Jamestown who came out in the dreary weather to watch a good tennis match. And, for Lafayette coach Pat Thompson and her players, such a notable victory is long overdue. The Jamestown folks long have said they regret that two teams from Region I don't go to state, because they've usually found the Rams to be of state tournament quality. The last few years, if there had been a state Group AA girls tennis poll like the one in football and basketball, I can't think of a time I would've voted Lafayette lower than No. 6 -- and sometimes as high as No. 2.
