Wrestler of the year
ANDREW WILLIAMS, JUNIOR, TABB, 130 pounds
Three years on the mat for Tabb, three state titles.

Not to mention Andrew Williams picked up his 100th high school win last season — as a sophomore. The Web site virginiawrestling.com has Williams ranked first in the state at 125 pounds, regardless of classification — though he moved to 130 pounds for the postseason.

After winning yet another Region I title on his home mat, Williams beat Grundy’s Ethan Owens 5-3 on March 8 to take the Group AA state crown.

“It’s actually kind of hard coaching a kid with his talent level,” Tabb coach Doug Roper said with a bit of a chuckle. “There aren’t many kids in the room quite like him.”

The state title culminated a year in which the junior went 42-5, with four of those losses coming in the nationally prominent Beast of the East and Walsh Ironman tournaments.

First team
103 – MIKEY EMANA, FRESHMAN, NEW KENT
Emana finished seventh in the Group AA state tournament after winning the Region I crown. Along with Luke Todd, Emana was a large reason for New Kent’s success in the Bay Rivers District this season.

112 – STEFFAN BAKER, SOPHOMORE, POQUOSON
Baker finished fourth in the Group AA state tournament, culminating a season in which the sophomore went 38-16, recording 12 wins via pin. Baker finished the year ranked eighth in the state.

119 – JONATHAN HOLT, JUNIOR, POQUOSON
Despite not placing at the state level, Holt won the Region I crown this season and helped Poquoson win its second straight district title. He had a 39-15 record this season, recording 23 pins.

125 – COLTON CRABTREE, SENIOR, POQUOSON
Crabtree was the runner-up in the Region I tournament to Chancellor’s Chris Smith. Despite not placing in the Group AA state meet, Crabtree was 26-16 on the year, with half of his wins coming via pin.

130 – MARSHALL ROBINSON, SOPHOMORE, SMITHFIELD
Robinson went 37-3 this year, finishing third at the state level after a regional runner-up finish to Tabb’s Andrew Williams. Ranked third in the state, Robinson won his weight class in Colonial Heights, the Great Bridge Holiday Classic and the Lake Taylor Invitational.

135 – LUKE TODD, SENIOR, NEW KENT
Todd, ranked fifth in the state, won the Region I title this season before finishing sixth in the Group AA state meet. Todd is a large part of why New Kent finished the season 24-3 and second to Poquoson in the Bay Rivers District.

140 – CODY SILVA, JUNIOR, POQUOSON
Silva, ranked second in the state, finished fifth in the Group AA tournament after recording a runner-up finish in Region I. Silva went 41-5 this year with 21 pins.

145 – KAYTON MARSHALL, SENIOR, POQUOSON
Marshall went 35-5 this season for the Islanders, taking a state title in the process. Marshall won 22 of his matches by pin and was ranked second in the state.

152 – CHASE MCADAMS, JUNIOR, POQUOSON
McAdams finished third in the Group AA state meet after winning the Region I title. Ranked second in the state, McAdams went 45-4 with 32 pins.

160 – DEL BRYCE, SENIOR, POQUOSON
Bryce won the Group AA state title to wrap a season in which he went 40-7, recording 21 pins. His effort helped Poquoson win district and regional titles.

171 – CHRIS COLLINS, SENIOR, SMITHFIELD
Collins finished fourth in the Group AA meet after falling in overtime to Fluvanna’s Willie Crawford. Collins, ranked fourth in Virginia, finished second in the Great Bridge Holiday Classic.

189 – CHASE ENNIS, SENIOR, GRAFTON
Top-ranked in the state at the Group AA level, Ennis became just the second Clipper to capture a state title. The Region I champion was 38-2 on the season.

215 – SHAWN SWEANEY, JUNIOR, LAFAYETTE
Ranked second in the state, Sweaney finished fourth in the Group AA meet after finishing second in the Region I tournament. Sweaney was 43-7 on the year, including a title win in the Ram Cup.

285 – KEITH PERSON, SENIOR, GRAFTON
The first-team all-Region I defensive lineman went 40-6 this season, including a regional title and a fourth-place finish in the Group AA state tournament.

How could Odis Wesby not be 1st Team at either 135 or 140? He beat Silva from Poquoson after the season was over (but before you published this) and finished 6th in AAA, which is more impressive than Silva's 5th at AA. You ought to do a little more research before putting together your lists.

Finally, Sal Leonardi from Hampton should also have bumped one of the 1st Team 135 or 140 you listed.

You have to be kidding about 119. How can you pick a wrestler who went 0-2 at States over a wrestler that went 4-2 and placed 4th at the same State tournament.

I agree with the last post. You have to pick Westby over Silva.
The number 1 criteria has to be "state placing". What do you think these guys are peaking for.

If you are getting any incite in your picks, you need to include some people that aren't from Poquoson next time or at least give this some calculated thought.

Dear Kicker I Belive the 119 from Poquoson beat the kid from Lafayette 2 out of 3 times this year and what they base the Daily Press All Stars on is #1 head to head so that is that.. The Reason why there are so many Poquoson kids on the team ??? Well Look at it no team on this side of the water beat them. Come on be real when Lafayette football team gets 3 or 4 kids on the Dailypress all star team and Poquoson 0 I dont here from you then. Please lets not talk football because I want to know when Laf. will play some div. 5 teams....

Holt, Poq. and O'Donnell, Laf. wrestled 3 times.
The 3rd bout in the Regional final Holt won. No problem, he scored more points.
The 2nd bout in the Sectional final O'Donnell won. By pin in the 2nd period.
The 1st bout was given to Holt by DQ in the first period because the official was afraid of 2 Poquoson coaches and 1 parent that were standing at the scoring table.
Holt didn't win anything at that bout, the official gave it to him.

O'Donnell is a 2X placewinner and a senior.
Holt is a no time placewinner and a junior.

Again I say Holt went 0-2 at States and O'Donnell went 4-2 and placed 4th. Sounds like there were too many people standing at the scorer's table for someone to make a fair decision.

And, how do you explain Silva over Westby. That one is unexplainable. Go ahead and try.

you have to agree. AA competition is alot weaker than AAA. so placing 6th in AAA is alot better than placing 5th in AA. plus Odis beat him!

If You Havn't Noticed That Silva Wrestled At 140 And Westby At 135. Two Different Weight Classes. Even Though He Did Beat Silva He Finished At 135 Not 140.

To Kicker, I was at that match. I dont know what parent you are talking about, Poq. only had 34 people there. And Laf. about 12. I do recall the Poq. Coach talk to the ref. I have seen this Ref many times in the past and I dont think his is afraid of any wrestling coach. The Poq. kid went with a head butt no hidding that but the laf. kid went with a knee in a bad area which if you know wrestling(which at this point I dont think you do) Calls for a DQ.
And if you go back to the 0-2 for the poq. kid and 4-2 for the laf. kid. Everybody has a bad day Still the overall record poq kid with 2 wins over the laf kid.
P.S. Do you don't have to use those two kids name any more everybody mknows who you are trying to put down. if you want to cont. useing names why don't you use yours.

And as far as the other 2 kids you are talking about Lets talk about there records and the tournments they been to.
