King to be a Hokie
Daily Press
Warwick center fielder Va King, who has made the Daily Press All-Star team the past two years, has committed to play softball at Virginia Tech.
King said she has been accepted for admissions and guaranteed a spot on the 2009 roster by Hokies coach Scot Thomas. King has a 4.20 grade-point average in the International Baccalaureate program and hopes to receive an academic scholarship.
“Like most college seniors, I had no idea where I wanted to go,” King said. “But with Virginia Tech, the thing I noticed that really stood out was that everybody there is almost like family. You’re always seeing people with their Tech sweatshirts and stickers on their car.
“I met the coach, and he’s my kind of coach. I loved the campus — I loved the Hokie stone. So I’ll be trading in my maroon and gold for maroon and orange.”
King and her father, Stephen, drove to Blacksburg last week. They were able to watch the Yankees’ exhibition game against the Hokies’ baseball team.
King batted .459 for the Raiders as a junior.
