Jamestown ranks fourth and Grafton is eighth in the Virginia High School League’s Wachovia Cup standings following the winter sports season.

The Wachovia Cup goes to the school in each group with the best overall athletic program. Points are awarded for teams’ finishes in various state tournaments.
Jamestown trails Blacksburg, Western Albemarle and Brentsville District in Group AA. Lafayette is 11th, Poquoson 16th and Tabb 19th.

In Group A, Lancaster is first and King William second. Bethel, in 16th place, is the top Peninsula District school. Cox of Virginia Beach is the leader.

GLOUCESTER GIRLS SOCCER TEAM AT .500

Gloucester, the defending Peninsula District girls soccer champion, went 3-3 in the non-district portion of its schedule. Three starters are playing through injuries while first-team all-district midfielder Kaitlyn Reynolds is out with a knee problem.

“We used them to try and figure out roles for our players to get the best fit possible, which has been difficult due to injuries,” said Dukes coach Bob Fisher.

Defender Courtney Collier, a four-year starter, is a mainstay for the Dukes and stabilizes the back line. Freshman Emily Coleman has stepped in at goalkeeper after Heidi Lancaster-Taylor, first-team all-district as a senior last season, graduated.

“(Emily) is learning quite well, but the key will be the slope of her learning curve as we enter district play,” Fisher said.

“We are still trying to mesh our young players with our more experienced players to create balance on the field.”

TROJANS STRUGGLING

New Kent was everybody’s pick to defend its Bay Rivers District softball championship, and it just might. But after Thursday’s loss to Bruton, their third in four games, the Trojans are off to a 4-3 start.

This from a team that lost four games last season in advancing to the Group AA final.

“It’s been disappointing, but we know there’s been a big target on our backs,” head coach Betsey Lane said. “We’re the team everybody wants to beat. We’ve got to regroup and start the second half off with a bang.”

New Kent won its first three games but has lost to York (1-0), Poquoson (3-0) and Bruton (6-3) in the last 18 days.

“Our defense hasn’t been as good as it has been,” Lane said. “We’ve already made more errors this year than we did in all of last year. And that hasn’t been helping.”

WARWICK GIRLS SOCCER

Warwick’s new goalkeeper is Jessica Hubert, who has impressed coach Justin Chezem so far. Hubert, a junior, is a standout swimmer for the Raiders.

“Jessica has never played soccer, let alone goalkeeper, but she is getting better and showing no signs of slowing down,” Chezem said. “I have complete confidence in the girl.”

Warwick won both its nondistrict games 2-1 before opening PD play with a 4-0 loss to Kecoughtan on Friday.

ALL-STATE

Virginia Preps, a Web site that covers high school sports throughout Virginia, named Lafayette’s Art Crew to its Group AA boys basketball all-state team. Tabb’s Steve Sherwood received honorable mention.

Bruton’s Jen Falin and Poquoson’s Kelly Halverson made the Group AA girls second team, while Lafayette’s Addie Williams and Southampton’s Anita Ricks were on the third team.

The only other team announced so far was the Group A boys team. King William’s Isaiah Hill made the first team and Surry’s John Newman received honorable mention.

OFF TO COLLEGE

Tabb running back Mel Jones will attend William and Mary next year and will try to walk on to the football team.
