This story was submitted to me this morning.
Smithfield, VA – York started the game with O’Connor getting a lead off single off Freshman Lincoln. York sacrificed O’Connor over to second with one out, and then it was Olsen’s turn at the young freshman which resulted in another hit putting runners at 2nd and 1st. Prosper comes up with a shot to shortstop which resulted in an error and reaching 1st to load the bases. Lincoln strikes out Lamb and then pitches a nice rise ball which resulted in a pop fly to Hendrix at first in foul territory getting Smithfield out of the inning.
Prosper starts the game off strong from the mound only giving up 1 hit to Smithfield’s Dudney which flared just outside the reach of York’s Lucker for a single. Prosper finished the game giving up only four hits and five strikeouts with one earned run.
Smithfield’s defense continued to be strong behind the young freshman who after struggling the 1st inning cruised through the next 6 innings with without a threat by York. The young freshman showed poise and determination as she continued to mix up her pitches throughout the game keeping York off balance with a variety of pitches from a change up to a curve ball and basically everything in between.
Smithfield’s offense came alive in a small way, in the bottom of the 4th, when Baham lead off with a drag bunt single reaching safely, then followed by one of the hottest hitters in the Bay Rivers, Dudney, who hit a hard shot to center. But the deciding element to this game was the error that followed the hit to centerfield without anyone backing her up which resulted in both runners scoring. --- Making the difference in the game.
For each of the errors Smithfield’s defense committed they backed it up with spectacular plays. One which immediately comes to mind was Baham going deep into the 5/6 hole coming across her body to throw it over to Irvine who was waiting at second for the force out in the top of the 7th inning after Shematek led off with a soft single.
