Peninsula athletes won eight events at the Norfolk State Relays and turned 22 other top-three performances.
Bethel, which finished second in both team standings, won four of the events.
Arianna Betts breezed to victory in the girls’ 3,200 meters and Kayla Campbell won the shot.
Ja-Vell Bullard outlasted teammate Austin Cuffee in the 400. His 47.15 time was two seconds faster than his previous state best. Then he anchored the 1,600-meter relay team, which had no trouble winning in 3:17.08.
That relay team, consisting of Earl House, Cuffee, Sherrard Marrow and Bullard, will compete in the Penn Relays next Saturday. Bethel coach Eddie Williams said “we were hoping to be a little bit faster today,” pointing to the need to run in the 3:12 or 3:13 range next week in Philadelphia. But Bethel had little competition, winning the event by seven seconds.
Hampton’s Lavell Handy was a double winner, beating the field in the 110-hurdies and winning the triple jump. He was second in the long jump and, in the 300-meter hurdles, he was on course for a high finish when he fell over one of the final hurdles.
Jamestown junior Nick Durante set a school record with a 14-foot pole vault, six inches higher than his previous best. He came up short on all three attempts at a meet-record 14-6.
And Kecoughtan’s Brittany Beatty won the girls triple jump in 39-0 ¼. That, said coach William Washington, qualified her for the Nike Outdoor Nationals in June.
Washington was extremely happy with his girls performance in the field event.
Brooke Smith finished second in the discus, and Beatty was third in the long jump.
Grafton sophomore David Gunnerson finished second in the 800 in an area-best 1:48.41.
Landstown’s girls showed their strength, winning every event from the 100 to the 800, plus the 300 hurdles and 400-meter relay. The Eagles are the state Group AAA indoor champion.

York’s Sherelle White won three events in the Tallwood Team Challenge. She won the long jump, the 100 meters and the 200 meters.

Gloucester’s Hannah Varnell finished 10th in the 1,600-meter race in the Volunteer Classic in Knoxville. She was to run the 800 meters later Saturday night.
