Gloucester's Robb thrives on pressure
By Dave Johnson | djohnson@dailypress.com
Some players tense up in two-out situations. Some players thrive on it.
You wouldn't expect a freshman to be in the latter group. But shortstop Karli Robb, the No. 5 hitter in the Dukes' powerful softball lineup, says she prefers coming to the plate with two outs.
"Personally, I like those situations the best," she said. "I like the pressure. I like it when the count gets to 3-and-2. You know what you need to do, and you need to do it for your team."
Which is what Robb did last week in a Peninsula District showdown against Warwick. After Raiders' pitcher Travonna Byrd retired the first two batters she faced, Taylor Saulman and Stephanie Coates had back-to-back singles. Robb then looped a single to right-center to score both runners.
That gave Gloucester a 2-0 lead in a game it would go on to win 9-1.
"She's been getting big hits for us all year," Dukes coach Red Lindsay said.
