Poquoson's Evans begins to bear down
By Norm Wood | nwood@dailypress.com

Poquoson softball pitcher Sarah Evans finally is getting healthier … or at least she’s playing through the pain.

Evans (9-0), a senior who goes by the nickname "Bird" or "Birdy," missed most of the first two weeks of practice and games in March with a pinched nerve in her lower back. She was forced to split time in the pitching circle with teammate Star Gibbs (1-2) in March and early April while resting and undergoing treatment.

"(Evans) just couldn't do much of anything," said Poquoson coach Todd Bowden, whose team is 10-2 overall, 10-1 in the Bay Rivers District and first in the district. "We couldn't have shut her down the way we did at the beginning of the season if Star hadn't have pitched as well as she did."

In the last week-and-a-half, Evans has started to bear down. She has pitched every inning (26 total) in Poquoson's last four games. The Islanders went 4-0 in those games, and Evans gave up just two runs.

"If you can just grind your teeth and get through the pain, it'll be OK," said Evans, who said she suffered the injury before the season because her offseason pitching and workouts made one side of her body stronger than the other side.
