Drew Courtney of Robinson set a Virginia High School League boys tennis record Saturday by raising his total of individual state championships to seven.
If you play singles and doubles for four years, it's possible to win eight titles. Courtney didn't win the state title in his freshman year, but he won everything else in Group AAA.
The University of Virginia-bound Courtney beat Cox’s Ian Fraser 6-2, 6-1 at Jefferson District Park in Falls Church to become the first boys player in nearly 40 years to win three straight VHSL singles titles.
The Rams star claimed his fourth state doubles title later Saturday by teaming with Stephen Hardy to defeat Mills Godwin’s Kyle Parker and Kevin Calhoun 6-4, 4-6, 6-0.
That avenged a 6-3, 6-2 defeat that Parker and Calhoun had handed them during last week's team final at Huntington Park, which the Rams won 5-4 over 5 1/2 hours for their third consecutive team title.
Out of 12 possible championships, counting team play, Courtney got 10.
