MIDLOTHIAN –– The four-golfer Carlisle School squad received two subpar rounds from team members to own a one-shot lead entering Wednesday’s final round of the 2nd Independence Golf Club High School Invitational at Independence Golf Club (6,677 yards, par 36-36—72).
The private Carlise School in Martinsville, Va., was led by 16-year-old Alex Wise (Eden, N.C.), who equaled a day-one best score of 4-under-par 68. Martinsville’s Dylan Jensen, 16, added 1-under 71 for Carlisle, the state private school champions in the fall of 2007. Nicholas Austin also posted 4-under 68 and local James River High School is a stroke back at 7-over 295 entering Wednesday’s final round. Jamestown High School received three rounds of 3-over 75 or better and is four off the pace (298, +10).
In delivering Carlisle’s low round of the day, Wise, a rising junior at the school, shot 4-under 32 on the outward half to help him post his best score in a competitive event this summer. Wise made four birdies in a six-hole stretch, starting with back-to-back birdies at Nos. 3 and 4, before draining a 45-footer at the par-3 seventh. He completed the surge with a birdie at the par-5 eighth hole.
Jensen, also a rising junior, had only one par on a closing nine included four birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey. His eventful inward nine finished on a high note, however, as Jensen closed with two consecutive birdies.
Carlisle brought the minimum of four players to the event, but used a strength-in-numbers approach to lead the way. Martinsville’s Jack Adkins (76) and Cole Rothrock (79) contributed the team’s other two scores.
"I’ve been doing this for 20 years and this is the strongest team that I’ve had," said Carlisle coach Robert Weinerth, the head PGA professional at Chatmoss Country Club. "They’re all great kids and are willing to accept those bad things that come with the game every once in a while."
Austin shot three under on the closing nine to lead James River, making putts of 3 and 5 feet at Nos. 12 and 14, before sinking a 20-footer at the par-4 15th. After shooting one under on the front, Austin, a James River senior, opted for a more aggressive strategy over the final nine holes.
"I was just going for everything today and I’m going to do the same thing [Wednesday]," said Austin, a two-time Richmond Times-Dispatch all-metro selection. "Playing scared gets you in trouble."
Williamsburg’s Tyler Wallace paced Jamestown, firing 1-over 73, while sophomore Victoria Newbury (Williamsburg) added 2-over 74.
Among the two golfers competing individually in the event, Goochland High School junior Rick O’Connell led the way, shooting 2-under-par 70. O’Connell put together a consistent putting round, converting seven one putts and he went without a three-putt. One over through 10 holes, O’Connell registered three straight birdies, all inside 4 feet, at Nos. 11-13, to post red numbers. Two-time VSGA Junior Match Play champion Michael Moyers of Stanardsville (William Monroe High School) had even-par 72.
Independence Golf Club, owned by the VSGA Foundation, features a 22,000-square-foot clubhouse, an 18-hole Tom Fazio-designed championship course and a nine-hole Sawyer Short Course, layed out by Fazio. In addition, the club includes a separate junior clubhouse with dormitories for campers. The VSGA Foundation continues to champion junior golf initiatives, particularly those that benefit at-risk children. The club’s Robins Junior Program camps and clinics not only teach fundamentals of the game, but also empowering life lessons.
