Great race yesterday between HHS junior Christina Woodard and GHS senior Hannah Varnell. As she did in last years District championship, Varnell tried to draft behind Woodard apparently hoping to race past her in the final quarter mile. However, Woodard, showing more determination than anyone on the course yesterday, boys or girls, put on a surge at the beginning of the 3rd mile that put away Varnell for good.
These two young ladies certainly have pushed each other over the past couple of years, to the benefit of both. Their times yesterday were spectacular, with Woodard setting a new course record by over 10 seconds. This was the second time this fall that Woodard has bested her older rival, the first being at the Chesapeake Invitational at Bells Mill Park in Chesapeake several weeks ago, when Woodard finished second overall and beat Varnell by nearly a minute.
Both runners should be among the best at the regional race, which is set for next week at Bells Mill Park.
