Cape Henry Collegiate took a slim lead over regular-season champion Norfolk Collegiate after Friday's play in the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools girls tennis tournament at Huntington Park in Newport News.
Both teams went 6-0 in the singles first round, but Cape Henry's four semifinal victories exceeded Norfolk Collegiate's three. That helped Cape Henry compile 53 points to Norfolk Collegiate's 51.
Hampton Roads Academy put three players into Saturday morning's singles finals and moved into third place with 49 points, closely followed by Norfolk Academy with 45.
The top four teams won all of their doubles quarterfinals, making the doubles semis crucial. Those matches will be worth two points apiece, while all of Saturday's other matches will be worth one.
HRA's finalists are Shelby Harris at No. 2, Claire Spencer at 3 and Gemma Pansch at 6. Each won a competitive semifinal.
Norfolk Collegiate's Lauren Goldberg edged Walsingham's Clare Spooner 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5) to earn a spot in the No. 1 final against Bishop Sullivan's Malissa Sibly, last year's first-flight champion.
The other finals are Harris against Cape Henry's Brittany Pilkington at 2, Spencer against Cape Henry's Georgia Putney at 3, Cape Henry's Laney Clarke against Norfolk Collegiate's Shelby Ortiz at 4, Norfolk Collegiate's Carolyn Zemanian against Norfolk Academy's Denise Mousouris at 5 and Pansch against Cape Henry's Morgan Sabol at 6.
In doubles, Norfolk Collegiate has the top seed at flights 1 and 2, while Cape Henry heads the third bracket.
