Sectionals are over. Congrats to Smithfield and New Kent. I thought the team that really lost out with the helter-skelter sectional line-ups was Poquoson. Had either Poquoson or New Kent been in the Eastern sectional, they would have won. Plus, Poquoson would have likely qualified a couple other wrestlers at the heavier weights. That's the way it goes! That said, here are my finals matches for regionals and they should all be very entertaining, save a couple:
103: Ogburn (Poq) vs. Smith (Tabb). Semi's between Smith and Gregory (NK) should be interesting as well.
112: Emana (NK) vs. Pacella (WH). Semi's between Pacella and Hawn (Grafton) also fabulous. Wouldn't be surprised if Hawn won, but going with the senior.
119: Capozzi (Spotsylvania) vs. Baker (Poq). Rematch of western sectional final. Toss-up. Baker got countered twice on the same move which cost him points at sectionals. Hint: don't use that move again against the same opponent!
125: Foxworth (Poq) vs. Graham (Smith). Don't think they've ever met, and should be a beauty.
130: Shearer (Poq) vs. Robinson (Smith). Robinson is pick. Hope Shearer is 100%.
135: Williams (Tabb) vs. Tinsley (Poq). Great match a couple weeks ago. Still going with the senior, 3-time state champ from Tabb.
140: Smith (Chancellor) vs. Silva (Poq). Another rematch of the western sectional. Silva won first time, but it's still a toss-up. Semi between Smith and Gibson (York) should be good as well. Another strength vs. style.
145: Millbourn (Smith) vs. Ormsby (Chancellor). I'm taking Ormsby, but I wouldn't be surprised if either of the second place finishers at sectionals, Armstrong (Poq) or Junio (Tabb) beat either of the favorites in the semi's. A takedown, great move, one mistake is all that separates these four.
152: McAdams (Poq) vs. Weinstock (Chancellor). Another western sectional rematch with the same winner.
160: Young (NK) vs. Ayers (Pow). Pick: Young
171: Junio (Tabb) vs. Terry (Spots). Pick: Junio
189: Phillips (York) vs. Barner. Pick: Phillips.
215: Sweaney (Laf) vs. Deane (Eastern View). Sweaney
285: Davis (WH) vs. Canady (NK). I think both of these guys are sophomores, wow. Don't know who won head-to-head regular season match-up.
Those are my picks and I'm sticking to them. Don't like 'em, pick your own. See 'ya at Tabb on Saturday.

its called tradition. A winning one. If any of the other schools establishes a consistent winning tradition. i.e...multiple state titles, team and inividual, then maybe they would get more coverage.

Poor Poquoson I have to say that everyone else in BR District really feels bad for them the lost by 10.5 points less than 2 pins sounds like they held their own and considering they are the suppose to be the best in the district! Give me a break. Seems like as long as their winning everything is great. But if they dont the excuse come out. Further more no matter how well every other school does .The Daily Press covers Poquoson like their the only team worth watching. Give me a break!
Give me a break mom. What excuses are you talking about! The two best teams in the BRD WERE in the same sectional. That's FACT, and in case you missed the headline, which astonishingly enough was also in the Daily Press, New Kent beat Poquoson this year. The Trojans are the BRD champs, and very deserving of the sectional win as well. They wrestled there rear ends off, and had a better team from the lowest through the highest weights. They qualified 11 wrestlers for region, and that speaks for itself. So, trust me, I wasn't complaining. Here's another newsflash, the same two teams will also go 1-2 at regions. If you don't like the Daily Press coverage of wrestling, there's a phone number you can call. I'll take the coverage regardless of the team or individual in the article. Care to comment on the picks, the subject of the thread?

I never said that New Kent was not deserving of the win! The certainly earned it and I would never take that away from these young men/women who have worked to earn it. I say Yeah for New Kent . But what does anger me is that there have been many comments that Poquoson got cheated by the change in the Sectionals and that was what my reply to your comment was. Also that even though New Kent won the Daily Press sports page cover was about the small wrestlers no front page coverage of the Winning by both New Kent or Smithfield. I would think that would bother you also. Trust me calling and emailing the sports editor of the paper does nothing been down that road many times. I think that you took my reply that I was some how saying that New Kent wasnt one of the best in the district and that is not what I said or meant. And I never said that New Kent was complaining about anything nor did I at anytime address New Kent at all!!
Wow, a really hot ticked off York HS parent. Not the only one I would imagine. However, you and many others seem to automatically blame Poquoson for others' difficulties and shortcomings. Poquoson has absolutely no control over what the Daily Press prints. The Poquoson wrestlers have worked and trained very hard, and have earned the respect of many people. Unfortunately, they fell short on Saturday, and I imagine that nobody knows it better than they do.
And it WAS Poquoson's year to stay local for Sectionals. They were sent off in 2006 and 2007, and should have stayed home for two years. And it's a fact that if they had stayed home for Sectionals that it would have probably been a clean sweep. Then you would have been ever angrier at them.
Poquoson travelled to King George, wrestled their tails off and unfortunately came up short. They left it on the mat, and were already looking toward Regionals.
It was New Kent's year, they wrestled hard at the tournament, and came out the winners!
Instead of blaming Poquoson for your own teams' shortfalls, why not look at how you could improve the situation for your team.
The local teams will meat next Saturday. Unfortunately, I can already antcipate your anger when Poquoson takes a huge majority of the first place finishes.
If you have a beef with the Daily Press, don't take it out on the team they are covering. If you complain and the DP doesn't resolve the issue, do like I do, don't get the paper. Pretty simple.

Just for the record, New Kent qualified 12 wrestlers for the region. New Kent wrestlers don't wrestle to get big headlines in the Daily Press. They wrestle because they love it and win because they work hard. The most important thing is that they do it with respect for the other wrestlers and coaches. They are great sports. Whether they win or lose, you will not see them throw head gear or refuse to shake someones hand. That is what makes a true champion.

How about we all start over, and pick the winner(s) of the region? Also, regardless of which team or wrestlers make it to Salem and the state championship, if they're from the BRD, then I'm cheering for them. ALL the BRD, not just Poquoson. My hope is that one year someone actually beats Christiansburg.

Im so glad to for New Kent! The team, coaches and fans are great, I wish then the best of luck. Good Sportsmanship always. And while they may not do it for the Headlines its still a shame that they aren't recongized. Glad that someone got what I was trying to say.
