Lynn,

Coverage for wrestling this year has been outstanding. I wanted to let you know it is being noticed!

From results to features, you are bringing your "A" game. Thanks and keep 'em coming.

Yes, coverage has been great---if you are a Bulls fan, which Lynn seems to be. I agree with Yorkmom in earlier post regarding the success of other teams in the Bay Rivers District. Great job Smithfield and New Kent on your victories last weekend. And New Kent does have 12 people who qualified not 11...great reporting!

And coverage for Bay Rivers district is 3 times the amount than for AAA... I enjoy reading about the Bay Rivers kids and know most of them well, but I have had to really struggle to find out what had happened in the AAA PDR week to week.

What is it going to take for us (all of us - AA and AAA) to get the kind of coverage they get on the Southside???

I've been following wrestling for over 25 years. My point was specific to Lynn's articles. While our side of the water still lags behind the beach, I want to give credit to writers making it better.

I'm quite sure if he covered the AAA tournaments they would be done well.

The complaints have been loud for years about wrestling coverage. While it may not be what everyone wants it to be it still is improving greatly.

And yes, I am a Bulls fan but have admiration for ALL wrestlers and respect for competitors at all levels.

I know that we all would like to have more coverage in the paper of our sport.

But I would like to note that the Daily Press probably does more coverage of Wrestling than the Southside does.

Not to mention that they have been writing articles about some of the youth wrestling results in the community notes section of the sports pages.

Although there is always room for more coverage.

I would like to thank Lynn & Ed Richards for the coverage that they have done.

With all due respect, I have to say that the coverage that Lynn, Sonny and other sports writers provide is less than fair and balance to their readers, For example, in Sundays paper what did I see on the front page of the sports section but a huge picture of Phoebus winning their district (and I mean no disrespect to their wrestlers at all Good luck as the move one) I saw a article also on small wrestlers and a picture of a Poquoson wrestler, and the last article was 4 paragraphes on Cody Silva, with just maybe 4 words dedicated to New Kent and Smithfields success. But I have to say that was not fair and balance to me, futhermore Lynn had one of the championship match scores for York wrong but do you see a correction.
And Im really sorry but the some coverage rather than none theory doesnt hold water with this wrestling parent.

You know what....instead of worrying so much about other teams or wrestlers, why don't you worry about why your coach forfeited 4-5 matches in a dual meet several weeks ago because they were getting beat so bad. Everytime a person posts on a forum from this area in regards to wrestling....here is what you see:

-Mark Strickland
-New Kent beats Poquoson, New Kent was not healthy either so Poquoson can't use that as an excuse.
-Poquoson wrestlers are sore loser's
and I can go and on...the said thing is I am not even from Poquoson. I just watch wrestling....all teams. I have not seen a post yet that does not have a negative response about Poquoson. Hey,Congrats New Kent and Smithfield this district needs tougher competition. Just don't sit here and say things that are untrue because I can tell you and give you fact that several of the coaches from the top teams have alot to learn when it comes to on the mat professionalism. The reason no one writes about it is because they don't care or have time to write posts that are negative. This sport doesn't need this and this is high school. Parity is great for every sport but until other teams build the tradition of the top teams and stop worrying about just beating Poquoson then things will change. Other district teams train all year to just beat Poquoson and it seems from Poquoson's wrestling schedule they train for national exposure and top competition. I am sure they would have liked to win every district match and the district but the season is not over. Take a look at last year's team, they came back to beat teams that beat them earlier in the year. It is very easy to say another team has a better record or beat them in a dual but you have to just not beat Poquoson to be a top level team. You have to wrestle at the Beast of the East, Ironman, American Division/National Division at the Virigina Dulas, NOVA Classic, Ultimate Challenge, Great Bridge Tournament/Dual meet etc....Worry about your school, wrestlers, fans and coaches, when you start focusing on those things you might start to see more articles on your wrestlers and maybe more 1st place wins. Last thing, I am curious of how many kids train at P.W.A in the off-season because I do believe that was developed for ALL kids not Poquoson wrestlers, the thing about it is a Poquoson person started it and it is held in Poquoson. The Virginia Duals which was also established by a Poquoson person was designed to bring national exposure for ALL schools from high school to college..to let local wrestlers catch the eye of college recruits and to also let wrestlers from the area who are wrestling in college come back to their home state to wrestle in front of family and friends......just worry about your program and not others because that is the main reason we will only see "one year wonder" teams, if you strive to elevate your team to just beat Poquoson which might happen but when the season is over, they will have a win over Poquoson and Poquoson will have a top 3 state finish and several state champs, not to mention several parents with less stress because their Poquoson wrestler recieved a wrestling scholarship.....and respond as you wish but I am not from Poquoson, have a kid in P.W.A and don't have any close friends there, I just try to see the good things that the community does for the sport not just for their kids but for every kid in the district

I'm not real sure how this thread got to this... my point is that I would like to see more about wrestling - PERIOD - not just my teams - all Peninsula teams. Lynn and the staff at DP do a great job with the coverage they give our kids - I would just like to see more. For the record, I have kids that wrestle and have wrestled with several teams in the area, the more coverage we get the better. As we advance out off of the Peninsula, I think that our kids are often underestimated. But what matters in the end is what happens on the mat, not what's printed in the paper.

Some of you people need to get a day job or better yet a life. The kids "all BRD/PD kids" read this read this crap and it does nothing positive for them. I wish they would shut all the forums down and only post results. Then maybe some of you would have lower bloodpreasure. This S*** is getting old.

YHSWrestlingMom the coverage will never be equal all around, and no matter what happens you will never be satisfied.

Except for the results page, the DP only allows very limited space for ALL local high school sports. It's my understanding that the reporters submit their articles and the Sports Editor determines which ones are printed and which ones aren't. And they are edited for size as needed. Rarely do you see anything having to do with high school sports of the absolute front page of the Sports section.

The DP will almost always print about the athlete, team, coach or school that are tops in their field. They aren't going to write about the kid who took last in the race, or whose wrestling record is 10-30, or the running back who never got a touchdown, unless there is a huge human interest story involved. That's the life of the news.

New Kent is doing well. They beat Poquoson during the season, then they beat Poquoson and won Sectionals. If they continue to do well through Regionals and States, I hate to think this, but New Kent will then be placing themselves in the position where all of you who are currently bashing Poquoson, will then begin your attacks at New Kent. You always attack the teams who win. You always attack the kids on those teams that do well. Of course you can't be happy and excited for those kids and those teams, because, well, they beat all the other kids. And you think that they take the publicity from your kids. Not true. Your kids and teams just haven't earned it.

Saturday is going to be an amazing day. I do believe we may have a packed gym. I can't wait to watch ALL of the kids wrestle. Good luck to all teams at Regionals.

I dont think so. Nor would I bash New Kent if they do well because unlike some other teams their coaches and wrestlers are gracious winners.

I thought you said you didn't bad mouth other coaches or wrestlers...read your post again and let us know if you stand by that statement.

BTW; the media reports things that people are interested in. For the record; the Daily Press reports more about the PD during Football season because PD football teams are better (assumed) and they report more about BRD wrestling because BRD teams are better (again assumed). Bottom line; love or hate Poquoson, the public is more interested in seeing that Poquoson lost to New Kent than they are reading that York beat anyone (unless it was Poquoson)...The Daily Press is a business and Interesting Articles Sells Papers, which makes money for the business.

YHSmom,
Get off your high horse! York does not have the tradition that Poquoson has. . .period. Look at ESPN and see who gets the major coverage. Do you think the Yankees/Red Sox get more than the Pirates or Orioles? You just make yourself sound like a bitter mom whos kid is not getting the coverage you want. I live in the Richmond area but was told over a conversation about your CRAZY posts! Anyway, good luck to ALL area wrestlers as they make their way to states!

p.s. I do remember that NK was the main picture on the HRvarsity website when they beat Poq! And they definitely deserve it!

I'm serious he would get a wonderful write up. The DP has done a great job covering Andrew Williams, a non Poquoson wrestler. Even had a huge write up about Matt Graham and Smithfield earlier this year. To most of the wrestlers its not about seeing their name in the paper, most of them could care less whether they get some ink. Its the parents that seem to make a big deal out of it.

Oh, I saw your question and now I see your username....my comments weren't directed towards either of the places and names you mentioned. I also don't feel the need to put a schools name or coaches name down and my post wasn't directed towards just one team etc....it would just be nice to read a post from a fan or parent on another team saying something positive about the sport or ALL other teams, if they can't do that then they just need to stick to their team and team issues. I am not sure you know but you mentioning those names will start something WWWAAYYY off my main point.I am sure you are not out to start anything but again you are insinuating that I am talking about your team or coach...when I was talking about a team numerous years ago...and several coaches. FYI, if you were looking into the real point of the post and focusing on the OVERALL good that program has done not only for their own but for hundreds of other wrestlers, you would have realized that "one-year wonder" means what it says and not 3/4 of a year wonder..the season is still in the home stretch. So No it wasn't in regards to them and if I ever do post again, I will make sure I read the book " How to post a response on the Daily Press Forum without insinuating, making people upset who have nothing to do about this, coming across with a hidden agenda or making fans jump to a conclusion! I first have to read the book " Posting responses on the Daily Press Forum without making your personality seem dull or boring"! I am not real sure what your issue is. I asked you to clarify a post that when I read it I wasnt exactly sure what you were saying. It appeared to be an attack against a Coach and team that I happen to think very highly of. Pretty much how you seem to be taking this entire thread. I have no issue with the Poq. program the school, fans or the wrestlers or the PWA. Have friends that have kids in the PWA and have attended thier matches. Some of the best conversations I have had on here are with Bull Islanders. No problem with the Island, period. Dont have a problem with the DP either. Hopefully we are clear now on that issue.

As far as the sport, my wrestling roots go back to the Martins at Granby, Billy Guttermouth and the Conkrite's at Cox. I can remember the original Va. Dual when Menchville beat Cox, think there was 6 HS teams then. I can assure you I understand the sport, the traditions, the history and everything that comes with competing in it. Any kid, from any school that has the guts to lace them up and step on that mat has my respect, period, end of story.

I appreciate your honesty and have no issues with any of the teams mentioned....if I was not clear I am sorry. I am sure you do have a history with wrestling in the local area. To be honest my issue was not really with you or any of your posts.....I believe that my posts did excatly what other posts did....and that is getting off the main topic. I would just like to see less posts about negative issues and more posts about good things ONLY about wrestling.....maybe some of the people who complain about not getting their share of coverage can use this forum and write a post about their son, team or coach...as long as it is good. As I see it alot of wrestling fans read this forum. That would be a great way to get a little exposure. I will admit...even I fell into the "FORUM DRAMA" but it was to tempting to respond to comment in regards to my post. I will say I agree with your last statement....kids, from any school that has the guts to lace them up etc....is what should posted on here. Someone said the kids are the one's effected by this forum and there is no need to create more animosity between wrestlers that already want to bang heads with each other. All in all, I agree with your post; I have learned a valuable lesson about forums and I have also learned that I need to work on my social skills.....at least that is what one post said....Have a good day....good luck.....

Considering I started this thread, I thought I'd bring it back to my point.

Not because I am a Poquoson fan but because I am a former sportswriter and editor. Lynn Burke does a great job reporting wrestling. Are there errors? Surely so, but not many and not enough to overshadow the quality of each piece.

But maybe I should stop, because Ed, Sonny and Jeff may get upset because my thread is not fair and balanced.

Ligthen up and enjoy wrestling. We, the entire peninsula, have a wealth of quality wrestlers and I enjoy reading about their accomplishments regardless of what school they attend.:clap2:

mom - The error may not be Lynn's fault. "Official" mistakes happen all the time.

Kobe lost a triple-double one day last week when the tape was reviewed. In HS hoops, fouls go the wrong guy regularly (and occasionally they go a guy on the bench).

I reported a district match last weekend as 6-4, when it actually ended w/a RO, because that what I got from the tourney director - not a reporter's place to change an official result.

I agree with you better coverage is what we want. But it needs to be equal coverage.

I guess the DP powers-to-be finally read your rantings. According to the website in today's DP there will be a write-up about the York wrestlers heading to Regionals. I hope they included a picture. Isn't it exciting Mom?

Wrestling Fan Im sure that you mean this in the most sincere way. I was delighted on thursday when I read Lynn Burke's report on Menchville, Smithfield, Tabb, Lafayette, Jamestown, Gloucester, New Kent and Warhill. It is also a wonderful thing to see that The Bay Rivers Wrestlers hold 6 of the top positions. And then today I was again delighted to see York highlighted in Lynn's report. Great job Lynn!! I m sure that these reports had nothing to do with my post, but if they did then here is a lesson, that if you believe strongly that something isnt right or that you want to see a change stand up for what you believe. You may have to take attacks, insults and being the butt of jokes. But you will have done what you think is right and maybe others will benefit from it.
I dont want to be caught up in anymore Forum Drama so please only post positive comments.
Good Luck to all these wrestlers this weekend!!!

Of course my entry was sincere. To be honest, I was surprised but also glad that the article was there, along with the smaller bit on Colin Lenhardt. I know the wrestlers were excited to see it. It would have been great if the DP could have found a little more space to add a picture.

Of course the "High School" page lost the whole right side of the page to pro baseball coverage of lies, drugs, scandal, IRS issues, trades, $5 million dollar contracts, and assaults with baseball bats. I am sure that on the cutting room floor there was other "High School" sports news that could have been included in that precious space.

Good luck to all BRD wrestlers tomorrow at Tabb. It will be a great day of wrestling!
