I would have to say Kay Altman from Tabb, she has made great strides this year with such a young team!!!!

In order of preseason predictions:
Lane @ New Kent - it's tough to shoulder the hype and to live up to that hype. Lane has certainly done this. Her team seems to be getting better now that it counts more.
Bowden @ Poquoson - leading the district despite not having his ace at full strength for a good portion of the season and (the part that no one mentions)
having six freshman and sophomores in starting positions. Won a lot of close games where he could have pushed the wrong buttons but didn't.
Young @ Grafton - first year coach with all the expectations of a rabid fan base and still way up there in the standings. All this with having to go with unproven varsity pitching.
Aultman @ Tabb - picked at the low end of the scale yet contending for the district with an all freshman battery. Her team is well prepared and motivated every time they take the field.
It's a hard decision and in my opinion any of these four would be very worthy.

Aultman, by far. Her coaching skills show throughout every game. You can see the dedication with each step she makes, and her team shows off her reputation with the sense of respect they have for all fellow players and coaches. If you've been to any games you know she's a good coach because she talks the whole game! She motivates her team and isn't afraid to step on people's toes. :hail:

Aultam - How long has she been coaching??? Is this the first year she has been in the top 6?

Well Bayrivah girl, she is a great coach with great knowledge of the game! And besides she doesnt bunt her #4 batter during a close game!...Altman deserves it!!!:israel:

Oh I am not saying she does or does not deserve it. I was just wondering how long she has been coaching and why now is she the great coach. Why not last year or the year before.
As far as the bunting the #4 - Do not know what you are talking about.. Please explain.
Also she as a coach should try to make her field more softball playable. The no fence thing still is not right.

How many stats do I have to give you BayRivahGirl to show you that it really hinders Tabb more than other teams. And how many times do I have to repeat myself in that if you are a good ballplayer it doesn't matter if their is a fence or not, it's just a personal lack of talent.
To answer your question she has coached at Tabb High since last year and this will be her second time in the top 6. However, she is not new to this area and to softball. She has been around mainly coaching at the middle school level the past few years and has clinched the title down there quite a few times. Expect her to grab a few up at the highschool as well.
Anything else you wish to know from my bag of facts? :juggle:

Was hoping for brdballman response...Clearly an advantage for the other teams, and I've been at every game, for obvious reasons. The law of averages would dictate equal advantage since it is the same conditions for both teams. That means it should be swinging our way now, so to install a fence would be denying us the right to recieve our due....I think we should install a fence, but a highly engineered fence, that retracts on the opposing team...Now that would be an advantage.....:yo:

Already in the works I hear. Also they could place people behind the fence so they can hit the balls back in play with tennis rackets.
Would look something along the lines of this : :peep:
Maybe then people will have valid reason to complain about not being able to be fast enough to make it to third base when they hit it too the woods. But, I don't wish to hurt any slow people's feelings. You know what! I have an even better idea, let's just not even play defense and let them run to third so that we are nice enough to meet their needs. Half the time the umps don't even see any outs as it is. I hear that they have some kind of eye disease going around called "crappyeyesightis"
Watch out, you may get it too!
What other ways could Tabb stop being so selfish and actually give the other teams a CHANCE to beat them psh. Since they win basically every one of their home games.

I still can not justify 7 losts to a coach for the title. Does not make sense.,

Well Bayrivah Girl, COACH OF THE YEAR for PD is Mike Tallon and they were fourth in standings for the year! It not about where you are in standings, it is about how well you coach and know the game!!! My opinon Aultman should get COACH OF THE YEAR for BD!!!! And the comment I mentioned earlier about bunting your #4 batter. That what your coach did during the Tabb game a couple of weeks ago @ Tabb!!!! GOOD LUCK TO AULTMAN YOU DESERVE COACH OF THE YEAR!!!

Clutch Hitter,
In regards to your statement about bunting your number four batter- Sometimes a coach has to make certain decisions in order to put themselves in the best position to win the game. All of the players up and down every lineup, including the 3,4,and 5 power hitters, need to be able to put the bunt down because you never know when your team might need to move a baserunner. And besides, our team never needed our cleanup batter to drop a bunt down when they played at Tabb so I don't know what game you're talking about. But our coach has bunted our cleanup in other games in situations when it was necessary...and it paid off. Back to the topic...I'm not saying Aultman is not worthy of Coach of the Year by any means, just that her team's record doesn't support the typical coach of the year status.

BayRivah Girl, The reason you aren't familiar with the Tabb game Clutch Hitter is talking about is because it wasn't your team that was playing. I wasn't at the Tabb vs York game at Tabb but several people have said the clean up hitter got the bunt sign and laid it down and they were shocked to see a bunt in that situation. Anyway, you don't play for York or Tabb and apparently Clutch Hitter has made several references to and about York players because she thinks your from York.:flame:

Well Clutch Hitter might think that she knows a lot but one thing is for sure.. SHE does not know the difference between a good coach and great coach....
I am blessed because I get to see the PD area girls and the BRD girls play and I am amazed at the difference in both areas. Tallon has earned the right for PD coach of the year, where Aultman is still in the learning stage. But she will get it next year if that team continues to play like they have been. But sorry - I can not see it this year. If she was to get it with 7 losts then something is wrong with the way the whole process works.........

BayRivahGirl, wow, Coach Aultman is not in the learning stage, she is one of the most talented and experienced coaches in this district. I would really appreciate it if you would please just start getting your facts straight and stop acting like you know everything or anything about softball because you defintely do not. :tea:

Bowden hands down, to lose their first game like they did this year and then dominate from then on except for the N.K. bashing has been impressive.

I agree with you, Snoclaf. Bowden definitely deserves coach of the year.

Coach of the Year...to the victors USUALLY go the spoils. Last year, Tom Bunn did a great job turning around a down program at Lafayette. DID HE WIN COACH OF THE YEAR?...NO. The job he did with that group last year was amazing. I'm sure there are other examples. If coach of the year goes to a coach out of the top three teams, I'll be shocked.

Coach of the year should be one of your top teams - Have we forgot what top teams mean? He took his team and won for those that have forgotten. He got them in a top team finish. He coached them........

I pretty much agree, I was thinking him and the Grafton coach mostly because everyone expected them to be bad when Montini left and having to have a new pitcher. But how in the world did he blow the Bruton game:confused:.

05-16-2007, 06:43 PM
He didnt blow the Bruton game....the players did. They really didnt start playing untill it was too late in the game. Poquoson was predicted to finish 2nd in BRD, and they are at the top...thanks to Bowden

Congrats to Bruton for putting it together down the stretch. They won 4 in a row to get into the playoff when many counted them out. They played nearly flawless softball. They got the key hits and bunts to go up 3-0 and the the pitching and defense kept them ahead. Poquoson did not "blow" the game. It was like a playoff game and the better team on that day won the game.

drich, you are right, I did not mean for it to sound like the players "blew" the game I meant it to read that the coasching had nothing to do with the loss. I would never disrespect Poquoson, they are a great team and deserve to be where they are. They have worked hard all year to be where they are. Congrats Poquoson! :D

Hey guys I didn't mean any dis-respect to either team, or Bowden himself. I should clarify that I meant me and I'm sure lots of others were sure Poq. was going to win that game.

05-16-2007, 07:27 PM
Yeah ME TOOO. Poquoson just got a late start in the game. Falin just over-powered them. She took their short-game from them at the very start. But Poquoson just needed to have the attitude they did in the last 2 innnings the whole game.

My only wish for any BRD softball player is that they could spend one season with Coach Bowden!!!!!Softball isn;t the only thing you could learn. He would teach you leadership, integrity, how to work hard and commitment. He would teach you that TEAM above all is most important .I think that Coach Bowden is the only choice,.:)

Congratulations to Coach Bowden for the well deserved recognition of Coach of the Year. Anyone who has followed his boys basketball and girls softball teams over the years understands what a great job he does with his kids. The impressions he leaves upon his players will last a lifetime. HE DOES THINGS THE RIGHT WAY!
