Swimmer of the year
HANNAH DAVIS, SENIOR, LAFAYETTE
Perhaps no local athlete better epitomizes a team’s dominance than Hannah Davis does for Lafayette’s girls swimmers.
Davis was the Rams’ capstone as they won four consecutive Group AA state titles, never losing a Bay Rivers District final in the 50- or 100-yard freestyle during her career. She won state titles in those events as a junior and senior and set state records in both this year. She was also Daily Press Swimmer of the Year as a junior.
She will swim next year at the University of Virginia, in whose pool she set those state records. As a relay swimmer, she won seven state titles and is a member of two state-record teams: 200 and 400 freestyle.
Davis’ father, Emil, is a former William and Mary track and field athlete who is now an assistant coach for the Tribe. But Hannah always wanted to swim, taking up the sport when she was 4. She worked her way up through clubs, and last summer, she set a personal record by swimming 26.79 in the finals of the 50-meter freestyle at the USA Swimming Junior National Championships. She was 20th.

First team

The Rams swam the four fastest times in the area this season and swam their best time (1:51.18) while winning the Group AA state title. The team also won the Kecoughtan Invitational.

She didn’t swim the event at state — Grafton’s Brittany Evans finished second, in 1:56.13 — but Davis had the area’s top two times, her best a 1:55.26 in the dual meet against Jamestown on Feb. 2.

Meaghan Holloway
Grafton, sophomore,
200 individual medley
A repeat first-teamer, she is a strong candidate for next season’s Swimmer of the Year. She had the area’s top six times. Her best, a 2:06.99 first-place effort at state, was almost five seconds faster than the best time of the area’s second-fastest IM swimmer, Lafayette’s Boyer.

Lafayette, senior, 50 freestyle
There is a reason she was a hands-down winner for Daily Press Swimmer of the Year. She had the six fastest times in the area, her best being a 23.91 in the preliminaries at states. That set a state record. She swam 23.92 in the finals to win.

Meaghan Holloway
Grafton, sophomore, 100 butterfly
Was utterly dominant in the event. She had the area’s nine fastest times, peaking with a 56.89 winning effort at state. She also won the Bay Rivers District meet and Kecoughtan Invitational.

Hannah Davis
Lafayette, senior, 100 freestyle
She also set the state record in this event, but did it in the state finals, swimming 51.49 to best Evans (53.57) and polish off what 15-year Lafayette coach Harold Baker called the most dominant career he’s ever presided over.

Brooke Evans
Grafton, freshman, 500 freestyle
She and her twin sister, Brittany, helped pushed the Clippers to uncommon success: second place in the Bay Rivers regular season, third place at the district meet, second place at state. Brooke’s best time was 5:13.65 at the Kecoughtan Invitational. She placed fifth at state (5:19.16).

Lafayette, 200 freestyle relay
Not only did they have the area’s four fastest times, but they also won state and broke their own state record by swimming 1:39.46 to break the 1:39.74 they set in 2005. Davis and Johnson were on that team.

Caki Hartmann
Walsingham Academy, senior,
100 backstroke
She won the state private-school Division II title with a 57.87, helping Walsingham to a second-place finish. She won the state title last year, swimming 59.15. Her best time this season was 57.76, at the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools meet.

Paige Boyer
Lafayette, junior, 100 breaststroke
She won the state title while swimming her best time and the area’s best time: 1:05.72. She also won the breaststroke state title as a sophomore, swimming a state-record 1:05.25.

Lafayette, 400 freestyle relay
The Rams swept the relays at the state meet for the third consecutive year. In 2004, they almost swept but finished second in the 400 freestyle relay. But they set the state record the next year (3:37.60). They swam 3:38.11 at state this year, their best time of the season. They had the area’s three best times.

Samantha Perino
Tabb, senior, diving
She finished second at state, but her best performance of the season (341.60) came when she won the Bay Rivers title. She took last year off diving to focus on gymnastics and was fourth at state as a freshman and sophomore.
