WHERE: Old Dominion University.
AT STAKE: Both finalists will qualify for the Group AAA state tournament.
MONDAY’S QUARTERFINALS
10 a.m. —Maury (16-6, Eastern 2) vs. Denbigh (20-2, Peninsula 1) .
1 p.m. Hickory (16-6, Southeastern 2) vs. Cox (17-5, Beach 1).
4 p.m. Bethel (15-6-1, Peninsula 2) vs. Granby (19-3, Eastern 1).
7 p.m. Kempsville (18-5, Beach 2) vs. Great Bridge (19-3, Southeastern 1).
WEDNESDAY’S SEMIFINALS
5 p.m.: Game 1 winner vs. Game 2 winner.
7:30 p.m.: Game 3 winner vs. Game 4 winner.
THURSDAY’S CHAMPIONSHIP
6 p.m.: Semifinal winners.
OUTLOOK: Denbigh enters regional play with the Peninsula District regular-season and tournament championships to its credit after an 11-3 victory over Bethel on Wednesday night. The Patriots started senior Cameron Roth in that game, leaving sophomore Ethan Carter as the likely starting pitcher in Monday’s game against Maury, which lost the Eastern District title 3-2 to Granby on a wild pitch in the 13th inning. Granby will take on Bethel, which saved No. 1 starter Justin Shively in its 13-walk loss to Denbigh in the PD tournament championship. Denbigh lost 2-1 to First Colonial in the Eastern Region quarterfinals last season, when Menchville became the first PD team to win the Eastern Region championship since Woodside in 1998. Great Bridge beat Hickory 8-6 on Wednesday to claim the Southeastern District tournament title, and Beach District regular-season champion Cox lost to Kempsville in the tournament semifinals. Kempsville went on to defeat Bayside and claim the Beach District tournament title.
