Menchville’s Aaron Brownell and Jamestown’s Jacob Braig won intriguing semifinals Friday to reach Saturday's No. 1 singles final of the Newport News Invitational at Huntington Park.
Brownell beat Heritage’s Tonique Merrell for the first time in three meetings, winning 7-5, 6-4 after losing to him last year in the regular season and the Peninsula District title match.
Braig rallied from a 4-1 second-set deficit to win 6-3, 6-4 over Granby’s Stas Stekolstsikov, an exchange student from Estonia who has international tennis experience.
Among the other finals: Heritage’s Creighton Jones against Jamestown’s Elliot Mee at No. 2 and Jamestown’s Wills FauntLeRoy versus Heritage’s Dimitri Carney at 3.
