Report on Hampton Tennis Center tournament Sat.-Sun.
Shelby Harris and Graham Wilson, both of Newport News, and Dennis Afanasev of Williamsburg won their age groups Sunday in the Virginia Beach Tennis Patrons Association junior satellite clay-court event at Hampton Tennis Center.
Amid heavy winds Sunday, Harris beat Christina Bedi 6-4, 7-6 in the girls 16-and-under final. Wilson won the boys 14s with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Harrison Suttle, and Afanasev beat Peter Brodzik 6-2, 6-2 for the boys 10s title. Joshua Lee of Chesapeake edged Evan Rutherford of Newport News 7-6, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9) in the boys 18s final. Rutherford, like Harris and Suttle, plays for Hampton Roads Academy. … The final day of action in the York County Singles tournament at Back Creek Park was postponed until 10 a.m. May 19 because of high winds.
