Indoor Track & Field: Grafton Gunnerson - 2:33.06 1000m (#3 VA, #1 AA, Top 10 US)
Grafton's David Gunnerson competed in the seeded heat of the boys 1000m on Saturday morning at the VA Tech Invitational. Another record broken, or I should state, rebroken. Each time David competes, he breaks or rebreaks a school record, even ones that are outdoor records (1600 meter). David ran a 2:33.06, finishing fourth behind Albemarle's Anthony Kostelac, Gonzaga's (DC) Bill Ledder, and Marvin Ridge's (NC) David McCuiston. David's time places him #3 in VA, #1 in AA, and a potential top 10 national ranking. He is only behind Kostelac and Thomas Edison's Leoule Degfae for the VA #3 ranking. David has dropped his time from last year almost five seconds. David qualified for the Nike Indoor National Meet at the CNU Winter Frolic in December. Additionally, this time potentially puts him on a short list of high school boys to run at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational at the Armory, New York City, Feb 6-7, 2009. The Collegiate Invitational includes boys girls 600m and 1000m events where only eight (8) are invited to compete at. Coach Haigh has contacted the high school director for the meet with David's updated time. Selection for the meet is expected early this week.
