Golf: Deep Run wins elite VSGA Foundation event; Jamestown takes 10th

Provided by VSGA's Andrew Blair:

DEEP RUN HIGH SCHOOL WINS THE 4th VSGA FOUNDATION
HIGH SCHOOL INVITATIONAL
MIDLOTHIAN –– Central Virginia-based Deep Run High School received two subpar rounds from the last two team members to finish to post a four-stroke victory at the 4th Virginia State Golf Association Foundation High School Invitational, which concluded today at Independence Golf Club (6,677 yards, par 36-36—72).

A public school located in Glen Allen, Va., Deep Run, the event’s first day leaders, matched a final round best aggregate of 7-over-par 295 and closed play at 15-over 591. Charlottesville-area Western Albemarle High School matched the 295 total on the last day and finished second (19-over 595). Northern Virginia’s Langley High School, in McLean, Va., placed third (28-over 604). In the competition, the best four of five scores are counted toward the team’s aggregate.
Group AAA Deep Run trailed Western Albemarle by six strokes in the late-going, but senior Jason Schumacher had a final round best 3-under 69, while junior Chris O’Neill also posted red numbers, shooting 2-under 70 to fuel the Wildcats’ late rally.
O’Neill took home medalist honors with a 3-under 141 (71-70) aggregate and earned his third straight competitive medal. Putting together two solid ball-striking rounds, O’Neill was the only competitor in the field representing a team that bettered par both days.
“We have great team chemistry this year,” O’Neill said. “Everybody loves everybody. We go out and have fun. If we win, it’s even better.”
In carding the low round among competitors representing a team, Schumacher was two over par through five holes, but didn’t make a bogey the rest of the way. He collected three straight birdies during a pivotal mid-round surge, converting an up and down at the par-5 eighth hole, before draining consecutive 12-footers at Nos. 9 and 10. In the late moments, his score helped to reduce Western Albemarle’s from six strokes to only a single shot, before O’Neill helped to close things out. Courtney Wynne (77) and Mikey Cantor (79) and supplied the Wildcats other two scores in the final round.

Deep Run, the reigning Central Region champions, has won four tournaments this fall. The program took home its first victory in the VSGA Foundation High School Invitational and they undoubtedly hope the triumph is a prelude of things to come. The past three winners of the event have gone on to win the Virginia High School League Group AAA title. The Wildcats claimed the last of the program’s three consecutive state titles in 2005.
“It’s been a tradition of winning at Deep Run and we need to carry it on,” Schumacher said. “It’s the best feeling in the world when you accomplish what you’re expected to [accomplish].
“This is a tournament that tells you: ‘Are you a state-caliber team or are you not a state-caliber team?’ It brings confidence. We know that we can play with anyone in the state after this tournament.”
The Wildcats’ four-stroke victory matched the closest margin between the top two finishers in the four-year history of the event. James River High School also won by four strokes in taking the 2008 title over Carlisle School.
In the final round, Group AA Western Albemarle, located in Crozet, Va., was paced by Scott Wakeley, who shot even-par 72. Junior Brett Engle and sophomore Kent Miller each logged 74s, while junior Alex O’Dell closed with 75. Wakley and O’Dell led the Warriors with each turning in a two-day 3-over 147 aggregate.
Among the competitors playing individually, two-time reigning Richmond Women’s Golf Association Amateur champion Lyberty Anderson, 14, of Chesterfield, a newcomer at Manchester High School, recorded a final round 3-under-par 69 and finished with the low 36-hole aggregate of 5-under 139.
Independence Golf Club, owned by the VSGA Foundation, features a 22,000-square-foot clubhouse, an 18-hole Tom Fazio-designed championship course and a nine-hole Sawyer Short Course, layed out by Fazio. In addition, the club includes separate junior clubhouses with dormitories for campers. The VSGA Foundation continues to champion junior golf initiatives, particularly those that benefit at-risk children. The club’s Robins Junior Program camps and clinics not only teach fundamentals of the game, but also empowering life lessons.
