PREVIEW - Christchurch School

2006: 8-2, 3-1 Old Dominion Conference.
COACH: Ed Homer, 16th season (57-79-1, all at Christchurch).
SCHOOL COLORS: Navy blue and orange.
SCHOOL PHONE: 804-758-2306.
WEB SITE: christchurchschool.org
HOME STADIUM: Dischinger Field.
LAST YEAR IN PLAYOFFS: 2006.
Key game: Oct. 27 against St. Anne’s-Belfield. This is a rematch of last season’s state championship game, which St. Anne’s-Belfield won 21-10.
OUTLOOK: Christchurch has made three straight trips to the VISFA Division 2 playoffs, losing in the state title game last season. Including both sides of the ball, the Seahorses lost 17 starters. Senior Deion Walker, rated the third best wideout in the country by Rivals.com, is the centerpiece of this year’s team. He is a highly coveted recruit and was first team all-state choice last season, as well as a preaseason Parade All-American. Walker had 47 receptions for 735 yards and eight touchdowns last season, as well as 300 yards rushing. Defensively he made 32 tackles and had eight pass breakups and eight interceptions. He can line up at quarterback, running back and wideout, which puts pressure on opponents. Other top returners are wideouts Martiz Washington, Alex Hagans and Noble Cunningham and running backs Junior Furbert and T.J. Williams. New starters join senior center John Williford on the line. The tight end spot is up for grabs between Will Riley, Collin Brooke and Jake Peterson. Quarterback is senior and captain Henry Jones, but senior Robert Shermer should challenge for time there as well as at defensive back. Sam Miller, 6-5, is also in the mix at quarterback and wideout. Newcomers Josh Adams and Billy Kane, both 6 feet, should contribute. A tougher schedule makes a playoff trip a much tougher task as LCA, VES, St. John’s Prep and Benedictine are all new opponents.
