PREVIEW - Middlesex

2006: 7-4, 3-1.
COACH: Heath Cockerham, second year (11-10, 7-4, in one year at Middlesex).
SCHOOL COLORS: Blue and white.
WEB SITE: www.mhs.mcps.k12.va.us
HOME STADIUM: Middlesex High.
KEY GAME: The Sept. 14 game vs. Lancaster. Middlesex, a Division 1 playoff team last season, moves up to Division 2 and gets an early indicator of its prospects against a D-2 playoff team from last season.
LAST YEAR IN PLAYOFFS: 2006.
OUTLOOK: One student fewer and you could virtually pencil the Chargers in for another Region A Division 1 playoff berth. Instead, the Chargers will battle for a playoff spot as the region’s smallest Division 2 school for the next two seasons. The good news is that Cockerham thinks this year’s group is more talented than the one he guided into the D-1 playoffs a year ago. He says they are stronger and more physical, traits that bode well for battle against the region’s larger schools. Seven starters return on offense, led by multi-talented tailback Charles Curtis (5-10, 180), who ran for 1,100 yards last season as a junior. QB Tervin Baylor will run more than he passes out of the Wing-T, but he can throw it. Wingback Malcolm Ward is a teriffic athlete who can run and catch the ball. All three will play both ways, as will James Hudgins, who anchors the lines after earning all-district honors on both sides of the ball. The Chargers might need to beat King William and win the district title to reach the D-2 Region A playoffs. But if anyone in the district is capable of pulling off that feat, they are.
