PREVIEW - Bethel
2006: 4-6 overall, 3-6 in the Peninsula District.
COACH: Jeff Nelson (first year at school; 0-10 in 1 career season). SCHOLL COLORS: Green and gold. SCHOOL PHONE: 825-4400. WEB SITE: bhs.sbo.hampton.k12.va.us HOME STADIUM: Darling. LAST YEAR IN PLAYOFFS: 1996. FAMOUS ALUMS: Allen Iverson, Jimmy Williams, Carl Francis. KEY RETURNING PLAYERS Jontel Evans Jr. RB/DB 6-0/195 Teddy BaCote Jr. QB/S 6-3/195 Aris McGlone-English Jr. QB/S 6-2/195 Trent Blowe Sr. LB/RB 6-1/235 Tyler Blowe Sr. LB/TE 6-1/240 Antoine Jarvis Sr. WR/DB 6-1/200 STANDOUTS Tyler Blowe, TE/LB Trent Blowe, RB/LB Manning the interior of Bethel’s 4-4 formation will be the Blowe twins, a bonafied one-two punch. Both good students and well-conditioned athletes, they are a coach’s dream. “I call them our silent leaders,” Bethel coach Jeff Nelson said. “They don’t say much, but they sure do a whole lot.” In addition to making tackles, each plays offense as well. Trent rushed for 233 yards and five TDs as a fullback last season, and Tyler saw time at tight end. OFFENSIVE OVERVIEW In a word, the Bruins were lousy on offense last season. They averaged 12 points a game despite having one of the PD’s best tailbacks in Jontel Evans (1,344 yards, 7 TDs). Bethel was the only team in the district that didn’t have a single touchdown pass all season. QBs Teddy BaCote and Aris McGlone-English combined to complete 38-of-119 passes (32 percent) for 387 yards. They’re both juniors now, and they’ll have to be better. DEFENSIVE OVERVIEW Bethel gave up only 179 yards and 16 points a game last season, numbers that were in roughly the same neighborhood as state champion Phoebus. Three of their losses came despite holding the opposition to 14 points or fewer. LBs Tyler and Trent Blowe are outstanding, and Marcus Cooperwood brings experience to the secondary. The Bruins had some key losses up front. OUTLOOK In a year when everybody in the Peninsula District looks to be rebuilding to one degree or another, Bethel has the luxury of returning two quarterbacks who started last season, a 1,000-yard rusher and several key members from a strong defense. If BaCote and/or McGlone-English are able to take a huge step, and if the defense can be as good as last year, there’s no reason why the Bruins can’t at least reverse last year’s 4-6 mark. 2007 SCHEDULE Sept. 1 Granby (2-8) 2 Sept. 7 at Phoebus (13-1) 7 Sept. 15 Warwick (5-5) 2 Sept. 21 at Gloucester (1-9) 7 Sept. 28 at Menchville (2-8) 7 Oct. 6 at Denbigh (7-3) 1 Oct. 13 Woodside (7-3) 2 Oct. 20 Heritage (4-6) 2 Oct. 26 Hampton (9-2) 7 Nov. 2 at Kecoughtan (4-6) 7 2006 RESULTS Granby W, 12-6 Heritage L, 8-9 Menchville W, 28-6 Hampton L, 7-48 Gloucester W, 13-0 Warwick W, 20-7 Woodside L, 31-36 Kecoughtan L, 0-14 Denbigh L, 10-23 Phoebus L, 6-13 DAVE JOHNSON
