Smithfield too much for Surry
By Jim Heath | Correspndent

SMITHFIELD — In a game that saw a little bit of everything — rough play, first-game rival, even a 40-minute lightning delay — the one constant was Dyrell Roberts.

The Virginia Tech commitment carried the ball 25 times for 192 yards and four touchdowns on Friday as Smithfield defeated Surry 25-0 in the Battle of Route 10.

The Packers took the opening drive and marched it 69 yards with the last 4 coming on a Roberts run up the middle. The extra point was missed for a 6-0 lead with 8:16 left.

The Roberts Express struck again in the Packers’ next possession as he capped a five-play scoring drive with a 2-yard run. The conversion failed, putting Smithfield ahead 12-0 with 5:34 left in the first quarter.

Surry struggled to find any offense as its first four possessions went three-and-out.

Smithfield made the score 18-0 as Roberts scored on a 19-yard scamper with 2:39 left before halftime.

Smithfield closed the third quarter with a 63-yard scoring drive. Roberts had 61 of those yards, the last 4 coming with one second left in the period for his fourth touchdown of the game. Alan Domack’s extra point made it 25-0.

As a miniature cannon boomed, the first lightning bolt was seen behind the visiting team’s bleachers. Ten minutes into the first 30-minute delay, another lightning bolt was seen, restarting the delay clock.

The fourth quarter saw Surry put together its most sustained drives of the night, accumulating 64 of their 90 yards of total offense — which just edged out its 89 yards in penalties.
