New Merchants Square brewery, bar arcade and restaurant Precarious Beer Hall is on track to open its doors to the public Saturday, co-owner Andrew Voss confirmed.

The 9,700-square-foot brewery and restaurant features a 10-barrel production brewing area, arcade games and a small stand serving up Southern California-inspired street tacos called the Electric Circus. Precarious takes the place of the former Season’s Restaurant and Stefano’s Pizza in the Henry Street Shops at Merchants Square.

In a prior interview, Voss and co-owner Chris Cook said construction in the space has been underway since last January. Voss said work on the outdoor patio is expected to continue throughout next week, but should be completed in time for the brewery’s grand opening celebration June 15.

Once completed, the 1,100-square-foot patio will seat 50 customers and will feature a gas fireplace, couches and two wood trellises holding up a polycarbonate top to offer shelter.

Precarious Beer Hall will open at 4 p.m. during its first week in operation, but will open daily at 11:30 a.m. starting June 16. Its regular hours will be 11:30 a.m. to 1 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 11:30 a.m. to 2 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

With Memorial Day in the rearview mirror and a summer full of travel opportunities ahead, gas prices in Virginia are the 10th-lowest in the country, according to a list of state gas price averages reported by AAA.

Virginia motorists were paying about $2.51 a gallon on Friday, which was more than averages for Oklahoma, Texas and South Carolina, but still cheaper than our neighbors in North Carolina, West Virginia and Washington, D.C. The cheapest gas in the country can be found in Mississippi at an average of $2.36 per gallon, according to AAA.

The report states that average prices across the state were 5 cents per gallon more expensive last week and 13 cents more expensive last month. Prices in Virginia are still well below averages from one year ago, when drivers in the state were paying an average of $2.71 a gallon for regular-grade gas, according to the AAA report.

“Gas prices have been trending lower now for the past month, and there are no signs of pump prices changing gears toward more expensive for the summer season,” said Georjeane Blumling, AAA Tidewater Virginia spokesperson.

Friday’s national average was $2.77, which is 12 cents per gallon less than last month and 16 cents cheaper than averages from last year.

Locally, AAA reports Friday’s average gas price in James City County was higher than the state’s average at $2.56, while York’s average was lower at $2.50 per gallon.

According to crowdsource gas pricing website GasBuddy, Williamsburg motorists can expect to pay as low as $2.43 per gallon at the Speedway station on Second Street or the Wawa on Merrimac Trail, or as high as $2.89 per gallon at the BP station on Richmond Road.
