COLLEGE FIELD HOCKEY

Marcella Sabbagh scored the go-ahead goal on a penalty stroke in the third period and Katie Abendschoen added an insurance goal in the fourth as No. 16 Christopher Newport defeated Cabrini 3-1 in the first round of the NCAA Division III field hockey tournament Wednesday at Jennings Family Stadium in Newport News.

Maddison Steele scored the first goal for the Captains (15-5), while Delaney Norr and Abby Asuncion each had an assist.

CNU will visit No. 3 Rowan in a second-round match at 11 a.m. Saturday in Glassboro, New Jersey.

The Captains outshot Cabrini 32-4, including 20-2 in the second half.

Caroline Gallagher scored the lone goal for Cabrini (14-5).

Cox graduate’s two goals send JMU to Sun Belt final

Redshirt junior Clay Obara, a Cox High graduate, recorded his first college two-goal game as James Madison routed Georgia State 5-0 in Huntington, West Virginia, to reach the Sun Belt Tournament final in the Dukes’ first year in the conference.

After finishing the regular season under .500, seventh-seeded JMU (8-7-4) knocked off Marshall, seeded second and ranked fifth nationally, 1-0 Sunday behind an Obara goal. The Dukes will try to gain an automatic NCAA Tournament bid when they play at top-seeded Kentucky, the nation’s No. 2 team, for the Sun Belt title at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Cameron Arnold scored JMU’s first goal, rebounding a Kevin Larsson shot in the 33rd minute. Obara scored from close range in the 50th and 77th. Rodrigo Robles had three assists.

UVA falls in ACC semifinal shootout, awaits NCAA

Virginia lost 5-3 in a penalty shootout at Syracuse after their 2-2 draw in an ACC semifinal Wednesday night, leaving the Cavaliers (10-4-4) — who are ranked 11th nationally — to await their assignment Monday to the 48-team NCAA Tournament.

The Orange (13-2-4), ranked third in the nation and seeded second in the conference tournament, made all five of their attempts in the tiebreaker and got a save in the second round from Russell Shealy. Colin Biros’ kick ended the game.

In regulation, Syracuse went ahead on Jeorgio Kocevski’s penalty kick in the 27th minute. The third-seeded Cavaliers pulled even in the 38th minute when Andreas Ueland headed in a header assist from Axel Ahlander. UVA went ahead in the 66th when Leo Afonso knocked in a rebound after Shealy made a diving save of Phil Horton’s shot.

Syracuse pulled even in the 84th minute when Lorenzo Boselli scored.

Syracuse will face eighth-seeded Clemson for the title at noon Sunday in Cary, North Carolina. The Tigers won 2-0 Wednesday at fourth-seeded Wake Forest.

COLLEGE WOMEN’S SOCCER

UVA game pushed back to Saturday

Virginia’s first-round NCAA women’s soccer match against Fairleigh Dickinson has been moved to Saturday due to the threat of inclement weather Friday.

The match will start at 6 p.m. at Klöckner Stadium in Charlottesville.

COLLEGE WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Howard tops Norfolk State

Kayla Diaz collected 53 assists and Rya McKinnon added 23 kills to lead Howard to a 3-1 (16-25, 25-12, 25-23, 25-18) victory over Norfolk State in a MEAC volleyball match Wednesday at NSU.

Carla Hernandez posted 17 kills, Sydney McCree had 27 assists and Nicole Rodriguez added 14 digs for the Spartans (7-16, 7-6).

The two teams will meet again at 6 p.m. Friday at Howard to conclude the regular season.
