If Menchville makes the basket, time runs out and Heritage wins the game. So instead of ripping the officials for their actions. Shouldn't we ask why is Heritage fouling this situation? Maybe that is a better question. Better yet if the previous board were still calling these games instead of the present group would this even be brought up? Just a thought.
Because the player made a dumb play but the officials completely botched a rule, even when they didn't have to make a split second decision. The horn had sounded they had a chance to discuss what they were going to do, not the same as missing a call as the Big East officials did.

PB125 had about 79 officials (according to JCC's post that no one has disputed) to cover just the PD games last year so if an official made a mistake like that he/she might have to worry about losing future games b/c there would someone else available to step in. TBOA has about 65 this year to cover both BRD and PD so they scraped and scrunched to get folks to cover JV games. They just care about bodies in place to cover the games. And just think, if TBOA had got its way it would have been a JV/V doubleheader and those same 2 officials would have been sticking around to do the varsity game.

There is a difference between missing a ball/strike call or a play at first base and improperly awarding someone a base. Judgment vs. rules knowledge.

Re: PD Basketball Venues

Here's one way for the f'ing adults we entrust our children with 6 days a week to fix this officiating problem and squash all the immature and juvenile sniping that has been going on here and out in public for the last year.

At the conclusion of the 2011-12 VHSL basketball season TBOA needs to merge back into PB125 and bring all its contracts with them.

As a single organization for the 2012-13 season:
  • Mr. Whitley administer all contracts in effect for the BRD, Page and Peasley middle schools, and all private and middle schools in York, IW, JCC, New Kent, and Poquoson.
  • Mr. Watkins administer all contracts in effect for the PD, Christchurch, and all private and middle schools in Hampton and Newport News.
  • At the conclusion of the 2012-13 season have an election for PB125 commissioner as Mr. Watkins' term expires in 2013 and I believe Mr. Whitley is TBOA commissioner by appointment.
I try to stay objective and stick to the facts I know. But no intelligent person can say the stated goal of Mr. Lee Martin (Kecoughtan AD) to improve the quality of basketball officiating across the board has been accomplished by the decision made by the Peninsula District principals and ADs last May. It was a short-sighted, poorly thought out decision based mainly on the incorrect and cynical assumption that everyone who officiates sports does it just to chase a dollar.

If you too are tired of this mess and want the best for our children who run up and down the basketball court as part of their scholastic experience feel free to steal, copy, and/or plagiarize my ideas above and send a letter or email to your respective school boards and district superintendents and Joyce Sisson at VHSL headquarters.
