Game Highlights

A young determined Lafayatte team continues to show why exciting times are ahead, in a 4-3 loss to one of the top Bay Rivers teams in Grafton. Tyler Kirby kept Grafton hitters off balance most of the night, scattering 8 hits and 3 earned runs in a complete game effort. Although Lafayette hitters had only 3 hits, they hit the ball hard all game, striking out only once. To their credit, Grafton made every play. They did not have an error and turned two critical double plays. Grafton got on the scoreboard first when CJ Roth reached on a bunt single and advanced to Second on a throwing error by the Lafayette Third Baseman. He scored one batter later on Nic Kurz's groundball single. They scored again in the Second Inning when Kyri Washington singled to Left scoring Nathan Hicks. Hicks was inserted as a courtesy runner for Ream, who started the game on the mound. Ream led off the inning with a line drive single to Right Center. Lafayette put runners in scoring position in the first two innings, but was unable to capitalize. The next inning was a different story. Jeremiah Antle singled up the middle and Austin Cohn followed with a walk. Solomon McCray drove a single to Right, scoring Antle and moving Cohn to Second. Warren Atkins then hit the ball sharply to SS, who started a 6-4-3 double play. Cohn then scored on a Wild Pitch just prior to Ream walking Zach Dorcy. That proved to be the end of the day for Ream. Ream finished with 2 2/3 IP, 4 BB, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, WP, HB. Lane Thomas relieved Ream and got the final out to end the inning. With the score tied 2-2, Grafton's Robbie Hiser led off the top of the 4th inning wth a walk and moved to Second on a sac bunt. Washington hit a rope down the Third Base line for a double that scored Hiser. Roth bunted to move Washington to Third. Kurz then singled to Right, scoring Washington and putting Grafton up 4-2. Kurz was thrown out attempting to steal Second to end the inning. Lafayette had two golden opportunities for a potentially big inning in both the 4th and 5th innings. With one out in the 4th, Lane Thomas issued three straight walks to load the bases, but Thomas induced a 5-4-3 inning-ending double play. He started the 5th by walking the first two batters he faced, before being relieved by Will Thomas. With McCray on Second and Atkins on First, Zach Dorcy laid down a sac bunt moving the runnes up. Will Thomas then induced two groundballs to end the threat. Grafton was held hitless the last 3 innings and Lafayette made one final run in the bottom of the 7th that fell short. McCray singled to left with one out and advanced to Second on a Wild Pitch. He was stranded there when Will Thomas registered his first strike-out to end the game. Both teams played extremely well and as a fan of baseball, it was enjoyable to watch.
