Tears of joy or tears of sadness?
Phoebus coach James Daniel knew he and his players would shed one or the other as he watched the ball sail through the air on the running shot Mahir Sharif attempted from 28 feet as the final buzzer sounded. Had it gone in, the Phantoms would’ve scored three points and won their first-ever Class 3 boys basketball state championship.
But it didn’t, bouncing off the backboard to the left side of the rim as Northside of Roanoke held on for a 60-58 victory Thursday at VCU’s Siegel Center. Whatever joyous tears flowed came from the eyes of the Vikings, who won their first state final in four tries under longtime coach Bill Pope.
“He was one shot away,” Phoebus coach James Daniel said of Sharif. “If it goes in, we’re celebrating and crying.
“It didn’t go in, so we’re a little upset and got a little tears coming out.”
Until Sharif’s shot sailed wide, the Phantoms (25-3) were poised to complete a memorable comeback. They trailed by six points with little more than a minute remaining when Sharif scored on a spin move to make it 58-54.
“I just wanted to pull the team together and get (Phoebus) back in it,” said Sharif, who scored 13 points.
Inspired, Khyree Temple stole a Northside pass and made two free throws to cut the deficit to two points. Kaheem Zarif then stole the ball, but he was called for a charge as he attempted to turn his theft into a basket.
No matter, Sharif — whose steal clinched the state semifinal win over John Marshall two days earlier — came to the rescue again. He made a steal, and though he missed the ensuing shot, Temple rebounded and put the ball in to tie the game at 58 with 40.1 seconds remaining.
“We never gave up,” said Temple, who had 21 points, 13 rebounds and six steals in his final game as a Phantom.
But Kasey Draper made his own big play, and it would ultimately give the Vikings the title. After the Vikings ran the clock down to under six seconds, Draper attempted a shot near the basket but missed.
However, Draper snagged the rebound, shot again and was fouled by Temple with 3.8 seconds remaining. Draper calmly made both free throws, and though Sharif got a good look at the basket after dribbling downcourt, his shot was wide.
The final score highlighted the competitiveness of the game. Phoebus scored three more points from the field, but Northside (28-1) made 20 of 27 free throws to the Phantoms’ 15 of 27. Phoebus had a 30-29 rebounding edge.
Northside beat Phoebus 73-61 in a state semifinal two years ago but lost to Norcom in the final. Phoebus was playing in its first state final, and its nerves showed early.
The Phantoms made just 3 of 10 field-goal attempts, and 2 of 6 free throws, to start the game and trailed 12-8 after a quarter. But they were terrific defensively in the second quarter, stealing the ball seven times on the press.
Temple scored seven points in the second quarter and Sharif made two 3s as the Phantoms led 29-20 at intermission. The Vikings rallied quickly following the break.
Led by Jalen Jackson’s three 3-pointers, his only nine points of the game, the Vikings surged to take a 44-43 lead after three quarters. All three of his treys were from the corner.
“We made adjustments (in practice) to take away the corner shot and just failed to do that tonight,” Daniel lamented.”
James Madison recruit Julien Wooden, who scored 21 points, fueled the Vikings’ momentum with a dunk off of the dribble to start the fourth quarter. His two free throws gave the Vikings their biggest lead, 56-49, before Sharif led the Phantoms’ rally.
Draper, whose contributions included scoring 19 points and holding Phoebus forward Detionne Leach to four points, ended the comeback by making the two pressure free throws. They gave Pope, who lost to then-Bay Rivers District school Nansemond River in the 1992 and ’95 finals, his first state title.
“It goes back a long way,” Pope said of his state-title quest. “What I think is great is that in the whole process of doing this, we’re very fortunate to have this moment.
“You can go through it and it might not work for you, but it doesn’t define me. What defines me is how I want to be, how I want to go about it and the relationships I have.”
In the latter sense, the Phantoms are winners, too, their tears of sadness notwithstanding.
“We accomplished a lot,” Leach said. “We went through a lot of adversity to get here, so I’m just proud of this team because they’re my brothers.
“They’ll be my brothers for life.”
