HAMPTON — With all the hoopla surrounding the 2007-08 Bethel Bruins, one would expect teams to fall down and be walkovers to a potentially power-laden squad. Visiting Courtland obviously didn’t buy into the hype on Wednesday night.
Junior Jontel Evans scored 19 of his game high 20 points in the second half as the Bruins held off a pesky Cougar squad for a 58-50 opening-round victory in the first Ronald Curry Christmas Classic at Hampton University’s Holland Hall.
Bethel’s win advances them to tonight’s game against Deep Creek, which defeated Norview 75-63.
“We are just not as good right now as everyone has made us out to be,” said Bethel coach Craig Brehon.
“Yes, we have additions with the transfers, but until everyone plays more with each other and develop the chemistry needed, we’re not going to be to the level everyone has us at now.”
The visitors from Fredericksburg kept the game at a deliberate tempo throughout the night. Bethel (5-1) jumped out early 11-6 on a 3-point play from senior Paul Meredith with 3:29 left in the first before Courtland’s Luke Sellers scored five points in 11 seconds to tie the game 11-all with 3:10 remaining.
In the second quarter the Cougars used a dunk from Josh Hairston to take their largest lead of the game at 26-21 with 2:24 remaining.
From there, senior Bill Weaver hit a pair of free throws and Meredith drained a pair of 3-pointers to give Bethel a 29-26 advantage at halftime.
“Courtland did an excellent job of spacing the floor and playing the game to their tempo,” Brehon said. “Yes, we did force over 20 turnovers, but we didn’t turn as many into points as we should have.”
In the second half, Evans asserted himself, scoring his first field goal of the night on a floating jumper with 5:33 remaining in the third quarter to give Bethel a 33-28 lead. He followed that with a steal and layup 25 seconds later to jumpstart an 8-2 Bruin spurt. The teams traded buckets the remainder of the third quarter as the Bruins took a 45-36 lead heading into the fourth.
The fourth quarter turned into the Evans-Ever Aguirre show as both players combined to score 17 of the first 19 points of the quarter.
Aguirre scored all 14 of the Cougar points in the quarter starting with eight in a two minute span that cut a Bruin lead to 50-44 with 3:37 remaining.
That was as close as the Cougars got as a pair of Evans jumpers sandwiched by a Weaver layup pushed the lead back to 56-46 and advanced the Bruins to today’s game.
