PD doubles teams beaten in Eastern Region semis

The Peninsula District's top two doubles teams were competitive for a while Tuesday in the Eastern Region semifinals, but both fell at Centre Court Racquet Club in Newport News.
Heritage senior Tonique Merrell and sophomore Creighton Jones led for much of the first set before losing 7-5, 6-1 to singles champion Ian Fraser and singles runner-up Cameron Brawley of Cox.
On an adjacent court, Warwick's Charles Forman and Wesley Seamster lost 6-3, 6-1 to Western Branch seniors Bobby Kostinas and Sam Karr.
In the afternoon final, Fraser and Brawley held off Kostinas and Karr 7-5, 6-4.
Because of being a tougher half of the draw, Peninsula District champions Merrell and Jones were unable to duplicate their memorable run last season, when they were the regional runners-up and state semifinalists.
The doubles matches were marathons compared to the singles final, in which Fraser overpowered Brawley 6-1, 6-0.
Fraser won his first title in six straight sets. His only difficulty came when Kostinas grabbed a 4-2 lead in their semifinal, but Fraser won that match 6-4, 6-0 and went on to dominate.
Both Falcons earned trips to the state Group AAA individual tournament at Jefferson District Park in Falls Church, where they will play Northwest Region opponents in singles June 5.
The doubles pairings will bracket the two Eastern teams against opponents from Mills Godwin.
