Football: WASHINGTON AND LEE 19, KING WILLIAM 14
Scott Taylor sneaked into the end zone from 1 yard with 1:21 remaining Friday night to give Washington and Lee a 19-14 victory over King William in a Region A Division 2 first-round game in Montross.
Jamar Carter's 7-yard touchdown gave third-seeded King William (6-5) a 14-13 lead with 4:03 remaining, but the Eagles returned the kickoff to the Cavaliers' 27 and went on the winning drive. It earned second-seeded W&L (9-2) a trip to Tappahannock to face unbeaten Essex in next Saturday's regional championship game. The contest featured five lead changes. Josh Belfield sacked Taylor in the end zone for a safety, but Damien Ashton's 1-yard touchdown run and Isidro Alvarez's PAT gave the Eagles a 7-2 margin. Lewis Redman's 63-yard scoring pass to Daryl Powell gave King William an 8-7 halftime edge, but Taylor's 52-yard touchdown to Jamar Tate put W&L in front 13-8. Carter had 66 yards on 17 carries and caught three passes for 37 yards. Redman completed 12 of 26 for 177 yards, with one interception. He carried 10 times for 26 yards. But Taylor was even better, completing 13 of 18 for 202 yards and running 18 times for 53 yards.
