Hampton police said it made no arrests during a three-night citywide curfew from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. that began June 3 and ended Saturday morning.

City officials requested the emergency order curfew from Gov. Ralph Northam following two nights of civil unrest, as demonstrators protested racism, police brutality and the death of George Floyd.

Police said protests taking place in the evening on May 29 and June 3, which spilled into the early morning hours, were unlawful assemblies.

During curfew nights, police patrolled the entire city, mostly by car, but officers took to the streets using foot and bike patrols, Cpl. Amanda Moreland said Monday in an email.

Officers saw some people out after 8 p.m. but reminded them of the curfew and were able to get citizens to comply, Moreland said.

On the evening of May 29 protesters blocked traffic on Interstate 64 for most of the night, with the demonstration ending in a tense stand-off with police near West Mercury Boulevard. That following Tuesday evening, another march ended with a clash between some participants and police, who set off tear gas and projectiles to disperse the crowds.

Police arrested 10 people during the melee, most of whom hail from Hampton and Newport News, including eight adults and two minors. Charges for some included vandalism, or burglary and larceny.
