Cameron Roth, Denbigh, Senior

Cameron Roth does two things really well -- pitching and hitting -- but he enjoys one more than the other.

"I like to be on the mound in the center of everything," Roth said. "I feel most confident on the mound."

Roth's confidence surged in 2007 when he went 9-2 with a 1.40 ERA as a pitcher in his senior season at Denbigh, leading the Patriots to a 23-3 record, the Eastern Region tournament championship and their first state tournament appearance since 1996.

At the plate, he hit .476 and drove in 33 runs, as Denbigh swept the Peninsula District regular season and tournament titles.

Roth has a knack for rising to the occasion. In Denbigh's 8-2 victory against Warwick in the PD tournament semifinals, he was 4-for-4 with five RBI, three doubles and a triple.

"When people are on base in scoring position, you always want to produce. The thing is, you can't go up there and question yourself too much," Roth said. "You just have to relax and have confidence in your ability to hit."

Rest of first team

Ethan Carter, Denbigh, sophomore, pitcher: Carter went 9-1 with a 1.20 ERA, not losing until the quarterfinals of the state Class AAA tournament, when he threw a no-hitter in the Patriots' 1-0 loss. Carter struck out 102 batters while walking just 17 in 75 1/3 innings. He also hit .328 with 15 RBI.

Cody Brown, Tabb, junior, pitcher: Brown finished 9-1-1 with a 2.49 ERA. Named to the Bay Rivers District first team and led the Tigers to a district regular season title.

Thomas Drewry, Denbigh, senior, catcher: Drewry hit .410 with 32 hits and drove in 32 runs for the Patriots, who swept the Peninsula District regular season and tournament titles before winning the Eastern Region championship. Drewry also scored 20 runs and had a .551 on-base percentage.

Chad Guy, Tabb, senior, first base: Named the Bay Rivers District Player of the Year after helping to lead the Tigers to a regular season title. Guy hit .426 and was also named to the Region I first team.

Matt Mitchell, Hampton, junior, second base: Mitchell hit .420 for the Crabbers, who finished third in the Peninsula District. He drew 29 walks and struck out just six times while stealing 17 bases. His 21 hits included six doubles and a triple, and he drove in 17 runs and scored 21.

Kizuku Scott, Bethel, junior, shortstop: Scott hit .464, drove in 25 runs and stole 19 bases for Bethel, which finished second in the Peninsula District. He also played steady, and sometimes spectacular, defense for the Bruins, who advanced to the Eastern Region tournament.

Christopher McDougal, Denbigh, junior, third base: McDougal batted .459 with 29 RBI. He scored 40 runs and had an on-base percentage of .592. He filled in at catcher in Denbigh's first two Eastern Region tournament victories and pitched the Patriots to a 10-0 championship win over Granby.

Shawn Sizemore, Menchville, junior, outfield: Sizemore hit .682 and drove in 25 runs for the Monarchs. He hit 12 doubles, four triples and five home runs while committing just one error in the field.

Will Lamb, York, junior, outfield: Lamb managed a batting average of .508 and was 4-2 as a pitcher with a 1.60 ERA. He was also named to the Bay Rivers District first team and Region I first team.

Drew Hooper, Middlesex, senior, outfield: Hooper batted .500 and drove in 29 runs. His 42 hits included 10 doubles and seven home runs, and he stole 12 bases and scored 32 runs.

Patrick Morrison, Smithfield, junior, designated hitter: Morrison batted .428, including one homerun and drove in 17 runs. He held a slugging percentage of .638 and his on base percentage was .456. As a pitcher, Morrison was 8-1 in 54.6 innings. He had 52 strikeouts and a 1.52 ERA.

Matt Shoemaker, Menchville, senior, utility: Shoemaker hit .500 with 20 RBI and two home runs, including a grand slam, while playing shortstop, second base and outfield. He also pitched for the Monarchs, who finished fifth in the Peninsula District.

Unfortunately, I think you have Matt Shoemaker and Matt Armstead's stats slightly confused. There is no way Shoemaker's batting average was higher than little Armstead's and it was little Armstead that hit a grand slam, not Shoemaker. Also WHEN did Shoemaker EVER play in the outfield???? NEVER!!!!!!!!! Not in this season anyway. While realizing that Shoemaker is an outstanding ballplayer and was also a senior, let's not take anything away from the "OTHER" Matt on that team that had an AWESOME year and should be on your list!!!

Good selections for this years team. A lot of very good ball players too. But could some one please tell me what criteria is used to determine what players are selected from? There are a few players in the Peninsula District for sure that had better overall stats then the ones that were chosen for these teams. I would be interested in knowing how the Daily Press selects the players that make up the Daily Press Allstars. I know 1st hand how the All District teams are selected. I hope this one is not done the same way.

I noticed that Will Lamb frm York was listed as a 1st team and 2nd team selection. Is this the same person or an oversight I`ve never seen thiis before where one player was selected for 2 different positions.

The baseball teams were picked by Melinda Waldrop and Jason Jordan, who covered the PD and BRD, with input from Marty O'Brien, who gathered information from the Group A and private schools. We also send nomination sheets to each coach in our coverage area: Peninsula District, Bay Rivers District, Tidewater District, Tri-Rivers District and the 12 or 13 private schools in that area. Sadly, we get maybe 25% return from coaches.
