Bay Rivers District girls soccer preview
BAY RIVERS DISTRICT GIRLS SOCCER BY JENNIFER L. WILLIAMS jwilliams@dailypress.com WHO WILL BE THE TOP PLAYERS TO WATCH? York returns forward Christine Calderon, last season’s district Player of the Year. She scored 32 goals as the Falcons qualified for the Region I tournament last season along with Lafayette and Tabb. Lafayette’s midfield will be strong with the return of Lia Potts, Stasia Abid and Maggie Wilding, while the Rams’ defense is led by back Molly Hill and goalkeeper Addie Williams. Grafton returns all-state forward Lindsay Wicher (47 goals, 15 assists) and all-Region I forward/midfielder Halie Romasco (15 goals, 30 assists). Midfielder Maria Kienle, forward Michelle Krewinghaus and defender Katelyn Christein are the core of returning talent for Tabb. WHO WILL BE THE TOP SLEEPER PLAYERS OR TOP NEWCOMERS? Kasey Judkins and Avery Greenquist, both up from the JV, and freshmen Ellen Potts and Sara Abrahams are expected to play a lot for Lafayette. Watch for freshman Anne Wallace in goal and sophomore midfielder Julie Trumpoldt to be assets for Tabb. Newcomers to watch for York are defenders Michelle Rock and Vicky Finley and midfielders Uma Bal Kumar and Livy Wagner. Transfer Jaimie Jennett will be in Bruton’s midfield. WHAT WILL BE THE TOP TEAMS TO WATCH? Lafayette lost just two starters from its district championship team that reached the state quarterfinals. Rams coach Shaheem Abrahams expects to rotate various players at forward, looking to get the most out of his senior-laden group. Lafayette had the best season in school history in 2006, eventually losing to Riverbend in the Region I final and Charlottesville in the state quarterfinals. York lost only first team all-Region I goalkeeper Monique Washington, but she left big shoes to fill. Coach Susan Wiker will split time there between sophomores Annie Brooks and Alyssa Howel. Nathan Sharp is Tabb’s new coach and his team is a consensus preseason top three squad. Kienle, a junior, was honorable mention all-state last season. Tabb graduated standouts in midfielder Jenna Blackman and forward Brittney Kortz. WHAT TEAMS MIGHT BE MOST IMPROVED OR SLEEPERS? Grafton, young but talented and deep, returns 11 players from last season’s fourth place team. Bruton will be anchored by stopper Becky Perron, a four-year starter, and center midfielder Jenny Rolley. Jamestown’s new coach is Kevin Darcy, director of coaching for the Virginia Legacy. Midfielder Allison Aycock is the top returner for a young Poquoson team looking to move into the top half of the standings. WHAT WILL THE DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP HINGE ON? Lafayette will miss the scoring of Jordan Mayer and defensive marking capabilities provided by Sierra Sternberg, both of whom graduated. But the Rams return so much experience there shouldn’t be much falloff. Other teams’ ability to defend them, and come up with consistent scoring of their own, will be the only way to blemish their district record. Quick maturation by York’s goalkeepers would help put the Falcons in contention, while Sharp said his Tigers have quickness and depth but lack experience and size. |

ALLSOCCER2007,
One thing you'll find out about sports predictions, or atleast by the daily press, is that they are made based on last year and players lost. Don't worry about JHS, the standings at the end of the season are what counts. |

Re: Bay Rivers District girls soccer preview
Observer, you're touching up on a sensitive subject. For years Jamestown's football program has suffered and this year they finally hire a new head coach, a fresh coaching staff, and are getting lots of kids in the weight room.
So you wait until next season and we'll see if it makes a difference. But, what I do want to know is...are you a parent, player, or other? |
