Thanks for digging this out. Here are more numbers:

Woodside, Maury, York and Middlesex will each move up a division for the next two years under the Virginia High School League’s revised football division setup.

Woodside will be a Division 6 school in the Group AAA playoffs, York moves from Division 3 to Division 4 in Group AA and Middlesex shifts from Division 1 to Division 2 in Group A.

Football playoffs split each region in half with the schools with the most enrollment competing in the even-numbered divisions and the schools with the smallest enrollments in the odd-numbered divisions.

In the Eastern Region, Woodside and Maury of Norfolk moved to Division 6, while Princess Anne of Virginia Beach, and both Great Bridge and Deep Creek of Chesapeake moved down to Division 5. Both of those schools will lose enrollment when Grassfield opens in the fall. The new school also will be in Division 5,

In Group AA, the only change to an existing school moves York from Division 3 to Division 4. Warhill, the new high school in James City County, will be Division 3. Both Lafayette and Jamestown, which will both lose enrollment when Warhill opens, will remain in Division 4.

In Group A, Nandua becomes a Division 2 school. Nandua is dropping from Group AA to Group A in the fall and will be the largest school in Region A. Also, Middlesex moves up from Division 1.

So how do they determine who is in what division. Is it solely done on school attendances or are there other factors.

And why is it that we have division 1-6 here for football and not for other sports like baseball and softball?

what is the differance between , A, AA, AAA in virginia and A,AA,AAA,AAAA,AAAAA,AAAAAA in states like GA or CA, because if you talk to anyone from down south and you say you school was AAA they believe its very small ball.

It's done strictly on school enrollment or, more accurately, a figure called Average Daily Membership.

Football has had divisions for a couple of decades now. Basketball will be the next to try with Group A holding a Division 1 and a Division 2 state tournament next year.

Every state has different classifications based on enrollment. Someone would have to put a chart together listing how each state compares.

Here's what the VHSL Handbook says about establishing FB divisions:

68-8-1 Football Playoff System-The VHSL football playoff system separates schools
by regions at the 50 percent point of the total number of schools that sponsor football teams,
and that are eligible for the playoffs, forming two divisions within each region and group.

Beginning with the 1999 season, divisions will be established every other year prior to the
opening of schools for a two-year period corresponding with the football contract period,
based on ungraded students and on grades 9-12 of a school’s average daily membership
as reported to the State Department of Education on March 31 of the odd calendar year.

(Exception: The Executive Director is authorized to make exceptions when it is found that the
Department of Education membership figures do not reflect complete information to place
a school in its appropriate division.)

68-8-2 Football championships are classified as follows:
Group AAA Division 6 (larger schools)
Division 5 (smaller schools)
Group AA Division 4 (larger schools)
Division 3 (smaller schools)
Group A Division 2 (larger schools)
Division 1 (smaller schools)

68-8-3 When dividing schools into respective divisions:
(1) If there are an odd-number of schools in a region, the break point will be established
at a point to include the greater number in the small-school division.
(2) If the break point causes schools with the same membership to fall into separate
divisions, all schools so affected shall be placed in the small-school division.
(3) If, due to consolidation, a school’s membership changes to place it in a higher
division within its group, that school would be moved into the higher division but all other
schools will remain where originally assigned.
(4) Effective with the 2005-06 school year, if a school is placed in a football division and
its enrollment is at least 50% smaller than that of the largest school in that division, the school
could appeal its placement to the Executive Committee for assignment to the smaller
division no later than September 1.
