Denbigh boys, bethel girls win in PD track
Denbigh boys, bethel girls win in PD track By Daniel Maher |dmaher@hrvarsity.com Denbigh’s boys and Bethel’s girls continued their annual ritual of taking home the winner’s trophies from the Peninsula District outdoor track championships Saturday at Todd Stadium. With the Patriots claiming their third straight district title and the Bruins notching a fourth consecutive crown, they’re forming habits that the rest of the district seems powerless to break. Denbigh rolled up an impressive 197 points, meeting its goal of balancing its typically tremendous field production with huge wins from its running squad. The Patriots far outdistanced runner up Bethel (116) by adding wins in the 100, 200, 400 and 800 meters to victories in the shot put and pole vault. Bethel’s girls eased their way to a 136 total, giving some rest to sprinting stalwarts Shakia Forbes and Crystal Carrington, and reaping big point contributions from the distance tandem of Jasmin Branch and Arianna Betts. Branch won both the 1,600 and 3,200 races, with Betts finishing second. Menchville finished second overall, tallying 92 points. Bruins coach Eddie Williams praised his squad’s preparation and execution and lauded them for their consistency. "I always say it’s (winning consistently) a lot more difficult than people think," Williams commented, "The kids embrace it and take a lot of pride in winning districts, and using it as a springboard to regionals and states." Branch supported her coach’s line of thought. "We’ve been buckling down and training hard for districts," she said, "I think we just came out and did what we planned to do." Carrington did join Branch as a Bruin district champion, taking the 200 meters with a time of 25.68 seconds, but skipping the 100 meters. While no other Bruins snared wins on Saturday, Williams pointed to a "good team effort" and highlighted contributions from Amber Easter (third in the high jump), Asia Williams (second in the 400 meters) and Kamillah Barnette (third in the 300 meter hurdles) as key to building the Bruins point total. Denbigh coach Juan Jackson could also be liberal in his praise, noting that his squad is "probably the most well-rounded team we’ve had in a decade." There was plenty of credit to be given out, as the Patriots not only got expected wins from Jaymes Brooks in the shot put and Rodriques Johnson in the pole vault, but surged on the track behind victories from Jaron Peters (100 and 200 meters), Michael Shoates (400) and Jodey McNeil (800). Jackson credited a team meeting at the Penn Relays last month with building enthusiasm and team unity. Peters also pointed to that meeting as a key motivator. "Ever since the Penn Relays, because we didn’t do as well as we wanted, we all set ourselves a goal of dropping a second from our times," Peters said. Peters breezed to a win in the 100, posting a time of 10.79 seconds. "I surprised myself with 10.7," Peters said. "I was thinking like 10.9, but I pulled away and I didn’t hear anybody, so I knew I was way out front." McNeil took satisfaction that the runners were such a key part of the Patriots’ victory. "When we started off the year, we were kind of mad we didn’t do better at the indoor regional, "McNeil said, "We stated working, coming out to meets and seeing our success. We just kept building on that." Phoebus freshman Niamani Aduma was the outstanding individual star of the meet, claiming three district titles with wins in the girls’ 400 and 800, as well as the triple jump. Hampton had two standout performers, with Lavell Handy winning both the triple jump and 110 hurdles on the boys’ side, and Tierra Brown setting a meet record with a time of 13.89 seconds in the girls’ 100 hurdles. Heritage’s Sheanna Mitchell matched the meet record in the high jump, winning with a clearance of 5 feet, 6 inches.
