Gatorade has named Neil Ramirez of Kempsville as its baseball player of the year in Virginia.

At the time of his selection, the 6-foot-4, 190-pound senior righthander was 6-2 with a 1.46 ERA and 74 strikeouts in 52 1/3 innings.

In 12006, he was named an Aflac All-American and first team all-district.

Ramirez has a 3.22 GPA in the classroom. He's also served as a volunteer coch at youth baseball camps and clinics.

"Neil brings a great deal of natural ability to the park each day," said Kempsville coach Paul Shows. "What really imresses me is his preparation and work ethic, which are better than those of any kid I've coached in 15 years of high school baseball."

Ramirez will attend Georgia Tech on a baseball scholarship this fall.
