Region I final: Jamestown vs. Courtland
Region I final
JAMESTOWN 5, COURTLAND 1
SINGLES -- Ja. Braig (J) d. Coleman 6-3, 6-1; Mee (J) d. M. Mercer 7-5, 6-1; FauntLeRoy (J) d. B. Mercer 6-4, 4-6, 7-5; Hunt (J) d. Livesay 7-6 (7-3), 6-2; Hundley (C) d. Palmer 6-1, 6-1; Berl (J) d. Bradley 6-0, 6-2.
Wills FauntLeRoy spent 3 1/2 hours to win the clinching point for the Eagles, who won their second Region I title in three years -- but this time with three freshmen. Jacob Braig won a slugfest by being more consistent than Brandon Coleman. Freshman Elliot Mee survived a 12th game with numerous deuces to win the first set on Michael Mercer, whose mannerisms and game closely resemble those of American pro Robby Ginepri. But though his match lasted just 19 games, Mee was taken to a hospital afterward because of cramps. Josh Hunt hung in there through a tight first set, deftly using topspin lobs at crucial times. Jeremy Palmer lost to a solid opponent, but it turned out to be the previously unbeaten Cougars' only point. Seth Berl had little trouble with his opponent, making the Eagles' freshman starters 3-0 on the day. He, Mee and Hunt are ninth-graders.
