STORY: Region I quarterfinal: Poquoson 19, Caroline 4

Islanders keep momentum going
BY JIM HEATH/CORRESPONDENT

POQUOSON
After winning the Bay Rivers District tournament as the No. 4 seed, the Poquoson Islanders might have been concerned heading into Monday’s Region I quarterfinal whether the hits were still in them. Consider that answer an emphatic "yes."

The Islanders scored early and often Monday as they blasted Caroline 19-4. That put the Islanders (16-8) into a Wednesday semifinal at Spotsylvania, 4-3 victor over Park View of South Hill.

Hits for the Islanders did not draw too many gasps from the crowd, but were just in the right spots time after time.

"Their coach complimented me on the way we were putting the ball in play and going with the pitches," said Poquoson coach George Yeager. "They said they wanted to go inside and then tried to go outside with their pitches, but we kept hitting the ball into right field. Nothing really hard, but we kept finding ways to get on base."

Poquoson started its scoring in the first on a sign of things to come for the Cavaliers, reaching base on an error. Tyler Baker reached on the first of 11 errors by Caroline and scored on an RBI single by Clark Pinder. Clark wound up 3-for-4, scoring four runs, while his brother Chad was 4-for-5, driving in one and scoring one. Baker and Justin Bollinger added three hits apiece for Poquoson, which had 15 hits.

All benefited freshman pitcher Kyle Crockett, who allowed six hits and struck out six in six innings.

"For a youngster like him to start his first regional game, he pitched outstanding," said Yeager. "Except for the home run in the fifth, he kept Caroline off balance very well."

The younger Crockett added a hit and scored two runs in a nine-run fifth inning in which the Islanders sent 14 to the plate and took advantage of five Cavalier errors.
