With the offense struggling mightely the last two games, Paul Jones and Adam Emerson stepped up big on the mound and the Lafayette defense, which committed 6 errors in the opener against Poquoson didn't commit any yesterday. Smithfield starting pitcher, J Allen, was equally impressive, allowing just a run on 4 hits in 6 innings of work. Kevin Griffey relieved Allen in the 7th to earn the save. Smithfiled threatened to score in the 1st inning whe lead-off batter J Patton walked, stole Second, then was balked to Third. However, Emerson struck out A Holland and induced Griffey to ground-out to SS to end the inning. Lafayette scored first in their half of the First inning when Casey Heikes scored on a ground-out by Emerson. Heikes singled with 1 out and moved to Second on a single by Solomon McCray. A WP moved both runners up before Emerson's RBI ground-out. Lafayette managed only 1 more hit until the 7th. With score still 1-0 Lafayette, Emerson took a no-hitter into the 5th inning. H Coats led off the 5th with a single, biut was picked off First by Emerson. Things got a little more interesting in the 7th. Emerson, who was still throwing well, hit Griffey with his first pitch of the inning. Griffey moved to Second on a WP and Cots walked to put runners on First and Second with nobody out. H Shaffer sacrificed them to Second and Thrid, respectively. B Dixon then grounded out to SS scoring the tying run for Smithfield. J Small walked and with two out and runners at First and Third, Coats scored the go-ahead run on a WP. Emerson prevented any further scoring, but Smithfield now led 2-1. Paul Jones led off the Lafayette 7th with a hard hit double down the left field line and Graham Kennis followed with a walk. Griffey then came in to relieve Allen after throwing 8 strong innings earlier in the week. Anthony Pietromonaco laid down a nice sacrifice bunt to put the tying run at Third and the winning run at Second with one out. However, the game ended on a failed safety squeeze attempt, that resulted in a strike-out and the runner at Third being caught in a run down. |
