Middlesex wants to raise $1.5 million

Middlesex sets fundraising goal

Daily Press

Middlesex High School is trying to raise $1.5 million to improve its athletic facilities. When complete, they’ll be named for county native Syd Thrift, a former coach at the school and a long-time Major League Baseball scout and executive.

According to information from the school, plans for the Syd Thrift Athletic Complex include a new lighted baseball field, new lighted tennis courts, all-weather surface track, upgraded football and softball fields and full amenities for storage and concessions.

The complex will be funded completely through fundraising and grants.

Thrift graduated from Syringa High School in Middlesex County.

He worked for several professional baseball organizations, including the Pittsburgh Pirates, Kansas City Royals, Oakland Athletics, New Yrok Yankees, Chicago Cubs and Baltimore Orioles.

He died in September of 2006.

Contributions can be made to “The Friends of Middlesex County Public Schools” which is a 501 (c) (3) status for IRS tax purposes through Wachovia Securities at P.O. Box 1688 in Kilmarnock, VA 22482.
