DAILY PRESS ALL-STARS: Boys track

Daily Press

Player of the year
Garrick Piggott, Lafayette, Junior

Garrick Piggott was Group AA triple jump champion indoors, and was the Daily Press indoor track performer of the year. He continued to master his event during the outdoor season, becoming the Group AA triple jump champion with a winning distance of 45 feet, 11 3/4 inches.

He gained a measure of a national profile April 28 in Philadelphia where he hopped, skipped and jumped 47-3¾ feet at the Penn Relays. The effort was good for third place and tops among American triple jumpers.

As in the indoor campaign, Piggott was remarkably consistent, easily sweeping to triple jump victories in the Bay Rivers District, Region I and Group AA championships, improving his winning distances on each occasion.

First team
100 meters: James Harris, Middlesex, senior
: Harris started and finished his season well, producing a Group A state title with his best time of the year (10.81 seconds) and tying for first with a 10.91 at the All-American Classic in March. He also won the Tidewater District championship with an 11.10 clocking.

200 meters: James Harris, Middlesex, senior: Harris posted the best local time of the season (22.25 seconds) to finish fourth in the Group A state championships. He captured the Tidewater District crown in a time of 22.40 and the Region A title with a time of 22.62.

400 meters: Sherrard Marrow, Bethel, junior: By season's end, Marrow had the three best times among local athletes. A season-best time of 48.51 seconds placed him second at the Taco Bell Classic in Columbia, S.C. His 48.52 clocking in the Eastern Region championships made him regional victor. He finished 11th in the Group AAA state championships.

800 meters: Dean Gonsalves, Grafton, senior: Gonsalves broke the 2:00 mark in all the key championship races. He swept to victories in the Bay Rivers District (1:59.85) and Region I meets (1:57.39), and then capped his brilliant season with a personal best time of 1:55.37 for third place in the Group AA state championships.

1,600 meters: Andrew Mearns, Jamestown, senior: At the Southern Track Classic, Mearns ran a 4:16.50 for a third-place finish and the area's best time of the year. He also finished third at the Group AA state championships with a time of 4:20.94. He won the Region I title in 4:24.37.

3,200 meters: Andrew Mearns, Jamestown, senior: Mearns finished second in the Group AA state meet while posting the area's seasonal-best time of 9:25.71. He captured the Bay Rivers District crown in 9:38.95.

110 meter hurdles: Chris Jones, Jamestown, senior: Jones collected a Bay Rivers District crown and Region I championship with times of 15.05 and 15.03 seconds, respectively. He generated the area's top time for the season (14.84) when he finished second in the Group AA state championships.

300 meter hurdles: Sherrard Marrow, Bethel, junior: Marrow's time of 39.88 seconds in the Peninsula District championships swamped the field, proving he can effectively double as a sprinter and hurdler. His time of 39.41 at the Southern Track Classic was the season's best, netting him a fifth-place finish.

High jump: Ronnie Black, Menchville, junior: Black's Peninsula District winning jump of 6 feet, 5 inches topped all other local performers this season. He followed that with a fourth-place tie in the Group AAA state meet when he cleared the bar at 6-4.

Triple jump: Garrick Piggott, Lafayette, junior: Piggott's Penn Relays winning triple jump gave him the best distance of the season among local athletes. At the state meet he topped runner-up Ethan Nixon of Brookville by 11¾ inches.

Long jump: Nathaniel Abram, Mathews, senior: After winning the Tidewater District with a jump of 22 feet, ½ inch, Abram slipped to seventh (21-5) in the Region A championships. He rebounded to emerge as Group A state champion with a winning jump of 22-8¼.

Pole vault: Rodriques Johnson, Denbigh, senior: Johnson easily claimed a second straight Peninsula District crown and then followed that with a win in the Eastern Region championships. He matched his regional meet height of 14 feet at the Group AAA state meet where he landed in fourth.

Discus: Jaymes Brooks, Denbigh, senior: Teammate Terrence Riggins sneaked up from 11th ranked in the state for a surprise state title, but Brooks' runner-up finish did not tarnish an extraordinary season. He was top ranked in the state and grabbed Peninsula District and Eastern Region victories. His state-best toss of 172 feet, 8 inches smashed the district meet record by nearly 9 feet.

Shot put: Jaymes Brooks, Denbigh, senior: Brooks won the Peninsula District title with a distance of 53 feet, 11½ inches, and even though he improved upon that with a heave of 56-4½ at the Eastern Region meet, he had to settle for second, 5 inches behind Frede Spellman of Oscar Smith. His distance of 56-1 at the state meet left him in second behind Spellman again.

Second team
100 meters: Jaron Peters, Denbigh, senior.

200 meters: Phillip Thaxton, Grafton, senior.

400 meters: Florian Cords, Walsingham Academy, senior.

800 meters: Jodey McNeil, Denbigh, sophomore.

1,600 meters: Blaine O'Reilly, Gloucester, senior.

3,200 meters: Andrew Colley, Jamestown, sophomore.

110 meter hurdles: Brian Carter, Woodside, senior.

300 meter hurdles: Darren Harvey, Bruton, senior.

High jump: Danny Sitton, Grafton, junior.

Triple jump: Lavell Handy, Hampton, junior.

Long jump: Reggie Williams, Bethel, junior.

Pole vault: Dwayne Hollis, Denbigh, senior.

Discus: Terrence Riggins, Denbigh, senior.

Shot put: Terrence Riggins, Denbigh, senior.
