York Rebound

York intends to rebound

YORK Doug Pereira paced back and forth on York High’s practice field Wednesday, watching and instructing the offense on how to run different formations.
His blue visor did little to block the sun, making it hard to see every move that each player made.
"It’s beaming," Pereira said.
But when it comes to his team, the Falcons’ new head football coach’s vision is crystal clear, even on the first day of practice.
"We’re going to be better than we were last year," he said. "This team is gonna be improved and this season will be a buy-in season for us, but I know that we can get some good things done."
Pereira is one of four new coaches in the Bay Rivers District this season.
Grafton, Jamestown and Warhill, a new school, also have welcomed new coaches.
The Falcons were one of four district teams that began practice Wednesday, including last years district champion, Lafayette. The next wave of district schools starts practice Monday.
Pereira said that he spent so much time prepping for his first practice as a head coach, which mainly consisted of planning the practice schedule down to the second, that he was able to spend the entire morning Wednesday moving boxes into his new house in Hampton.
"It’s finally good to be out here with the kids actually practicing," Pereira said. "Just being here teaching was a relief for me. We’re getting to work now."
He knows in order to contend with strong teams like Smithfield, Tabb, Lafayette and Grafton — all of whom return key personnel — his team will have to work extra hard, especially since it has switched from the Wing-T, a power running offense, to the option offense, to favor its skilled finesse players.
"We’ve got a new everything," Pereira said. "The transition has gone exactly as I hoped it would. They’re picking it up really well."
Some of the biggest pressures with the new offense fall on quarterback Aaron Edwards and running back Jon Parks, who both like the freedom of the new offense.
"It’s better because we can read the defense and if they start catching on to our game, we can change it up," Parks said. "It’s hard to stop the option."
Edwards added: "I think the option suits our personnel because we have a lot of speed players and we’re all real smart. Jon and me are close, so we have the chemistry that you need for this to work. We feel like Coach knows what he’s doing with this."
Pereira came from Essex High in Tappahannock, where he helped the Trojans to a 36-13 record from 2003-06. They also made it to the Division 2 state title game and the state semis in that time.
The goal ultimately is to get York to that level after last year’s 2-8 season. It’s not a stretch, since the Falcons have enjoyed recent success, winning back-to-back Bay Rivers District titles in 2002 and 2003.
But the immediate goal is to work out a few kinks of a new offense.
"The good thing is that it’s not personnel issues; it’s technique stuff," Pereira said.
"We’re gonna win more than we lose this year. We have teams that we think we can beat now, and obviously we’ve got to get the work done to do that. The kids believe that they can do well, and that’s the biggest part." «
