Game Highlights

First, I'd like to congratulate Bruton on snapping their 40 game losing streak. Will Hailey came up big on the mound pitching a complete game, allowing only 5 hits and 1 ER. He was also directly involved in every run Bruton scored. But it wasn't just Hailey who stepped up his game. One day after getting beat badly by Smithfield, Bruton appeared ready to play. The last few years have been particularly tough for Bruton baseball, but I can honestly say that they show up ready to play with a good attitude each and every game. Bruton jumped on Lafayette starter Zach Dorcy in the top of the First. Chris Green led the inning off with a single to left and Kyle Morgan layed a bunt down the first base line. The ball was not fielded cleanly and both runners were safe. Hailey followed with a walk to load the bases and Ryan Farley drove in Green with a Sac Fly to center. Tyler Floyd grounded out to SS, scoring Morgan for the first of his 3 RBIs. Lafayette threatened in their half of the first after Hailey walked 3 successive batters to load the bases with two out. He was able to pitch out of that jam with a strike-out to end the inning. Lafayette did tie the score in the Second inning with two unearned runs. With one out, Brendan McGinty walked, Zach Dorcy and Jeremiah Antle both reached on errors to load the bases once again for Lafayette. Austin Cohn grounded to SS who threw to Second for the FC, scoring McGinty and moving Dorcy over to Third. With runners at First and Third and two out, Lafayette succesfully executed a double steal, which scored Dorcy to tie the game. You can see the confidence build for the Bruton players as the game went on and they played competitively. They went ahead for good in the top of the 5th. Morgan led off with a single and Hailey followed with a double putting runners on Second and Third with nobody out. Dorcy struck out the next batter, but Floyd's Sac Fly to CF scored Morgan for the go-ahead run. Bruton tacked on two more insurance runs in the top of the 7th when Morgan was hit by a pitch to start the inning and scored on Hailey's second double of the game. Hailey advanced to Third on the throw home and scored on a Sac Fly to Left in foul territory. Lafayette started to show some life in the bottom half of the 7th, but it proved to be too little too late. With one out, Cohn, hit a slow roller to SS for his second infield hit of the game. Solomon McCray and Warren Atkins followed with hard line drives to Left Center. Atkins' liner scored Cohn from Second amd moved McCray to Third. Atkins took second when the ball was bobbled in Left (he begged me to give him a double on that play). With the tying runs in scoring position Hailey settled down and retired the final two batters ending the game and igniting a short celebration by Bruton players.
